No posts lately as I was on my annual trek back to Alabama to visit family.
Last year we took down a maple and I was worried that it would be a little too far gone by this summer to be useful. It's a little punky near the edges, and a little pit marked, but I like working with wood like this...
Not going to say much since I put this one in my blog.
Mostly plywood, primed and painted. The headboard is a bookshelf, the front bumper opens and makes a small toy box. The largest, in terms of physical size, project I've attempted to date.

This cane has been SOLD.
Welcome Web Surfers:
If you are surfing looking for a special walking cane on the internet, go toward the bottom of this posting where you'll find a list of canes that I have built that are ready to ship immediately. Also, there are...
I was looking at bookshelves to build for my daughter's first apartment and came across this:
Switchback bookcase and showed it to her. She loved it, so I told her when she moved out I'd make it.
Well a few months later she's out and I reversed the design in Photoshop and Illustrator to make...
A folding camp table. One of my first "real" projects using more than screws and paint. Used spar varnish as it would be used outside and possibly rained on. Also my first breadboard ends. Given as a Christmas present.
I got all this Walnut lumber from a guy who owns a personal mill. The longest pieces laying down are 7' and it goes all the way down to 3'. The thick slabs on top are walnut as well. The boards standing in front of the stack are cherry - he threw those in for free!! The last picture is one...
As the grandfather of quite a few inquisitive grandkids and a responsible pistol owner, I've been searching for a kid-proof and yet instant access safebox for my gun. I've looked at all the biometric pistol safes, but didn't want to bother with batteries or complexity. I also wanted it to be...
Dusty56 posted a project on Business card Holders.
Bob # 2 posted a jig on making Business Card holders like Dusty designed.
The making of Business cards didn't strike my todo mind until Bob posted his. I thought that would be great for 4 of my children who work in jobs that require Business...
This is the 2nd rocking horse I've made using black walnut that I acquired from my employer, General Mills, in Minneapolis, MN. They were throwing out 200+ "U.S. Patent Award" plaques that measure 8"x10" and 22 of these triangular frames that displayed brass name plates of the inventors. I...
I just had to post pics of this -
I got these two bookmatched walnut boards off of ebay. If I remember the size correctly, they are approx 41" long, 7-3/4" wide, 15/16" thick. I've been spending my $$ buying wood I think is cool, but I haven't bought any tools yet - hence no posted projects...
Just wanted to show off a couple of wood finds. The cherry I found growing not far from where I live. The bole or trunk diameter of the tree was about 30'', but only about 3 feet before splitting off into two main scaffolding limbs, which were about half that diameter each. The bole, crotch, and...
Just wondering how many LJ's seek out and use free wood as I do. My day job is working in a shipping dept. of a valve manufacturer. Needless to say everything has to be palletized, and I occasionally run across really beautiful wood that's been used to make these, and so often some of these...
Well, while cruising craigslist I came across an interesting post in materials. Apparently a guy was giving away some air dried pecan because he was moving out of that state. The pictures showed a burl and some slabs; but he was an hour away. I decided to make contact and see what he really had...
HUGE Eucalyptus score
Sheesh. Good thing I have a truck now.
I saw a note on craigslist today (online classifieds) that a guy had put "10 to 15 more" eucalyptus logs out in the alleyway behind his house. LA is all blocks split in half by access alleys big enough to drive 2 cars through...
Lumber Bought at Auction
Over the weekend I went to an auction that had 600 bf of cherry, 400 bf of walnut and 400 bf of oak for sale. I wasn't sure how I was going to get it all back into the shop or where I would even put it if I won the wood but I thought it would be great to work on...
New Guinea Rosewood.
Seems you all post when you find a good bit of stick.
I bought a stack of New Guinea Rosewood, and when I dressed a bit of it this is what I found.
New (To me) Table Saw.
I've been getting by with a Craftsman Portable table saw at home for small ripping jobs. When I bought it I didn'tave a garage just a carport and a storage room so being able to put it up was at the top of the list of priorities. But a friend I work with is needing cash...
My First Wood Gloat!
Nothing like going on vacation and coming back with a truckload of free wood! Well, almost free. Before you all ask, I'll just say I can't give up my secret source because it's the gift that keeps on giving, haha. I have a ton of projects in store and as a result, I did...
Milling Walnut, Silver Maple, and some mystery logs!
Hey all,
Thanks for checking out my first blog post!
I've been collecting logs for the past year or so with the intention of milling and drying them, but only recently got around to it. Most of it is from jobs I've done for people cleaning...
African Mahogany (Khaya), Black Locust, and Purpleheart
Had to make one, everyone wants to…right?
Anyhow I got a piece of African Mahogany (Khaya), some Purpleheart scraps from my uncle who says they, believe it or not, use this "stuff" for they're trailer beds to haul equipment on. He said...
