  1. Stacking Jewelry Box

As a Valentine's present this year, I decided to try out a new design that I had been brewing on for a while - a 3-part stacking jewelry box. I decided to have the design coordinate with a previous jewelry box - http://lumberjocks.com/projects/44426 - I had made so they would look nice next to...
  2. China Cabinet

This is my last finished project. Made mostly of solid wood, hard maple and cherry, back wall is maple plywood. Finished with oil based varnish (alkyd resin). Design is my original. Doors are "semi open" frame. In early stage I wanted to make classical doors in complete frame, but in my sketched...
  3. Macaw

It's been a little while since I've had time to spend in the workshop. Anyhow, here's my first of '08. My design, cut at 11 X 14 from 1/8" Baltic Birch Ply in a stack of 3. It contains 386 cuts. This little birdy took about 8 hours to do.
  4. I Had To Try This One

After my previous striped box, I thought how much better it would have looked if I showed the quartersawn edges of the sycamore so this box happened. QS sycamore/Jatoba for the sides and hinges,mahogany/sycamore for the lid. Dimensions:12×7x4".Patron/Grizz wooden hinges. Finished with lacquer...
  5. Stacking storage boxes

I made these storage boxes from scraps. They are glued and nailed, and they go together very fast. There are a couple rails on the bottom to lock them together. 17×12 x 6, using 1/4 inch wood on the sides and bottom and 3/4 inch stuff on the ends.
  6. Stackable Storage Crates

Props to for the idea. For my boxes I used some 3/8 inch plywood that had been laying around outside exposed to weather for the past 6 months and some leftover 1x scraps. Everything is held together with glue and 18g brads until the glue dries. Overall dimensions are 11"W x 7"H x 16" D with...
  7. Stacking Flag Case

    Walnut, faux leather lining. Lacquer.
  8. Recent turnings

Square mahogany bowl. This will be a gift. Before and after flea market screwdriver. Now it's a tenon tool for the lathe. There are different opinions about using screwdrivers for turning tools, google it, get the info and decide for yourself.
  9. Stackable File Cabinets

A set of file cabinets I built as a Christmas gift for a friend at work. Made with red oak and stained using Minwax Jacobean, finished using a homemade wipe-on poly. They are actually three separate boxes with 100lb capacity full extension drawer slides. They fit into one another using small...
  10. Wood & Lumber
After a lot of work, I now have about 2,000 bf of walnut stacked and drying, and I have a few questions. It was a heckuva project-with one comedic slight hit that cost me a hundred bucks for some siding, and one very tense (two broken ropes and the tree sitting back down into the kerf)...
  11. Wood & Lumber
I harvest cypress tops out of slews from huge trees cut cut around 1905-1908. It's all heart with amazing color so I save most all of it. I have a very small DH kiln so I always have green and dry stacks to store inside most under 4 feet long. I coat the ends with wax within 24 hours and then...
  12. Wood & Lumber
I've been away a while but since my last post I have built an open shelter in the back yard, using a side board on board privacy fence as the back wall and the front fence as another side. The other two sides are open. It's 18×6 which should hold more than I can use at least for now. I also...

HUGE Eucalyptus score Sheesh. Good thing I have a truck now. I saw a note on craigslist today (online classifieds) that a guy had put "10 to 15 more" eucalyptus logs out in the alleyway behind his house. LA is all blocks split in half by access alleys big enough to drive 2 cars through...
  14. Wood & Lumber
Bought a stack of wood for $100 at an auction recently. Two trips to get it all home. Thought it was oak and cherry. Planed a few boards to find I have over 200 bd ft of walnut and over 135 bd ft of hickory, not counting the 10 large beams that were on the bottom of the stack. Most boards...
  15. Designing Woodworking Projects
Help….I've been using a ramp to get my giant tool setup into my truck for a year now. I used to do commercial work where I would be on the same job for months. Now I am using my license and doing smaller jobs, sometimes 1/2 a day….. I need to build a stackable setup that I can load easier (...
  16. Woodworking Skill Share
I just watched all of Charles Neil's videos on the pie safe (probably one of the most informative series of videos I have seen, check them out if your new to woodworking like me). He spoke of under mount drawer slides, but didn't go into detail on them. Are they essentially the same thing as...

How effective is a shop vac at collecting the small particles from a miter saw? I'm thinking of building a dust hood to contain the bigger stuff and wondering if a shop vac is going to do much for the small stuff.

I'm on the verge of resawing things now, and it's time to think about stacking and stickering the small slabs I'll be creating. Any reason not to use 1" strips of plywood? I'm not stacking huge slabs. Everything will be from logs between 3" and 11" wide, and under 3' long. Is 3/4" plywood thick...
