  1. Silver Maple and Epoxy End Table

I know its been a while since I've posted anything on here but I wanted to share a project I finished up a while ago. My wife had been wanting one of my woodworking pieces to be in our house for once instead of other peoples. So I came up with this one for her. This was part of the slabs from...
  2. Dyed hollow form with tutorial

You can read the two part tutorial that explains the process I used to dye this piece here: http://lumberjocks.com/jeffthewoodwacker/blog/9087 This hollow form started out as a bland looking piece of silver maple. I applied green alcohol based dye followed by blue alcohol based dye and then...
  3. Ready for a Beer II -- Ringmaster Edition

This was my woodworking item for the 2019 Beer Swap. I made them for LJ Steve . I decided to use my Ringmaster to make a can koozie and made a simple prototype using Douglas Fir that I re-sawed from a 4×4 with a bradford pear rim (4th and 5th picture, right koozie). The quarter sawn vertical...
  4. Two Silver Maple Gavels

These two are made from some silver maple limbs that were in my firewood pile. I turned a lot better than I thought it would. Almost too easy… The one with the larger head has some large worm eaten places. These were turned as spindles on my HF lathe. I used epoxy to attach the handles.

  6. Misc Turned Firewood 2020

I thought that I would finally post some of the things I have turned over the last year or so. These are some of my favorites. I'm always looking for interesting things to try or sometimes it just evolves based upon the chunk of firewood I mount on the lathe. 1: Spalted Sycamore bowls a...
  7. Silver maple, turning

This vessel took on an interesting twist when it dried. this started out as a hollow vessel until I had a catch and blew out the top :-)
  8. Queen Bed - Mission Style

Hello Folks, About nine months ago (feb 2009), I knew nothing about woodworking and had no tools what so ever, but decided I would build a bed for my girlfriend and our new apartment. Originally, I thought I might end up being able to sleep in the bed by the end of July. I started listening...
  9. First Retirement Bowls

Just retired and have the time to experiment with wood types (which I now have the time to find locally) and finishing. Epoxy, CA glue, Polycryl and wood fillers for cracks, punky areas and voids. I am looking for affordable alternatives to the Polycryl such as DOW's carbowax (which I have not...
  10. Midnight black

This hollow form was turned from silver maple. The piece didn't have a lot of character in it and I decided to dye it. I first used Klean Strip Wood Bleach to completely wash out the entire vessel. A vinegar and water solution was used to neutralize the bleach process. I had some black...
  11. Spalted Maple "Meat Slicer" Bowl

This is a spalted silver maple bowl that I turned on my lathe for the North Texas Wood turners club Christmas banquet auction and when it was done the wife said absolutely not you are not auctioning that off. lol SO here it remains in my collection until someone offers me enough money to be...
  12. Dropping a Massive 5+' diameter Wormy Maple

A local neighbor wanted this tree taken down about a year ago, here's the pictures of taking it down, trying to pull it with the grapple log skidder (was too heavy making the skidder start to wheely!), then splitting it in half with a 5' bar on a stihl 880 to lighten it up! This log is currently...
  13. Two Pieces of Silver

Two canes from Silver Maple Trees in the backyard. Both about 38 inches tall. The one on the right I removed all the bark, The one on the left I noticed an interesting pattern as I was sanding through the bark so I left it, I hope it shows up in the photos. Both finished with Spar Varnish...
  14. A LARGE "CRACKED" SILVER MAPLE CHALICE

THIS ONE IS KIND OF A DISAPPOINTMENT! But I thought I might as well share this anyhow. It blew apart while I was giving it the finish sanding. I guess the heat buildup caused the glue joint to soften. I was lucky enough to find most of the pieces, & re-glued it. It still looks fairly decent...
  15. Box from silver maple...knots and all

Picked up a chunk of silver maple, full of knots, from the "cheapie" pile of wood at the Woodturner's Catalog store.
  16. Handmade Silver maple slab table with white pedestals, Butternut wood bench and upholstered chairs.

Here's a slab table I made for my sister's birthday, made of a book matched pair of silver maple slabs, placed on some repurposed pedestals that I painted white, the bench is made from a butternut plank.
  17. Shogun Scrollwork on Silver Maple

This scrollwork is done on a piece of silver maple that, until last year, was growing in my back yard. A storm tore a rather large branch off, which I cut up for firewood. On a whim, I decided to run a smallish log through my bandsaw to see what it looked like. What you see is the results...

  19. Designing Woodworking Projects
I found a PDF copy of the July 1910 Craftsman Furniture Catalog by Gustav Stickley and in it there is a plan for a sideboard, a huge mass of a sideboard. The No. 840 Sideboard to be exact, and I want to build it. I've made a couple of smaller pieces so this will be a challenge to both my...

Just got back from the saw mill I mentioned in a blog back in July.http://lumberjocks.com/topics/110858 I finally got my silver maple logs cut into lumber.
