2 species of branches found in my green waste bin - what are they? I've had quite a weekend here in LA with the free wood gathering. It's laughable to you folks on farms, or out in the deep woods with harvestable lumber all around you, but here, we have to beg for our scraps, or put down hard...

New Year...New Hobby I have been known to take up a hobby or 37. At 42, on the cusp of 43, and well into the 'balding' years, I have decided that, in lieu of a midlife crisis, I would take up woodworking. Don't get me wrong, a new car and a 27 year old with huge, firm, hands would be wonderful...

Floor Type Alright, The short story is that I need to try and match up the wood that my floor is made from. There are some areas that were patched with plywood and I would like to refinish it. This is my first attempt at adding pictures to a blog so hopefully it goes well. I've refinished one...

The start... A while back I had a request for a ready made box… this time the commission is for a special item…. I do not intend to reveal the nature of the commission… suffice to say… follow along and all will be revealed… I took a board of Queensland Red Cedar [toona australis] Cut about...

A Mystery Tool - Christmas puzzle. I displayed some pictures of a tool / implement on www.flickr.com just over a year ago to try and find out what it is. It's had >120 viewings but no answer yet. Although unlikely to have woodworking connections, I thought it possible that a lumberjock might...

And now for something completely off the wall. Please be guessing what Lazy Larry is up to now… here is a lamination that I started today for a new found friend, Scott… Closer pic. One more. I added a little turps to highlight the colours… Dimensions are 1500 mm long but 50 mm square…...

What Can You Tell Me About This Lathe? This is just a question: Does anyone have one of these lathes and can you tell me any of its pros/cons? The link to the website which sells this lathe is found here The same lathe using the same exact photo is also offered on Amazon and eBay for about...

I walked into work today (www.albioninc.com) and laying near the door were two pallets. The piece of wood on one pallet caught this LumberJock's eye immediately. It didn't even have a finish on it, and that's why I was so impressed. The "chatoyance" was amazing, and I knew I would kick myself...

My aunt sent me pictures of this, she says it's a plant holder of hers. I have not seen it in person, just wanted to share it with everyone as I think that it is fairly unique, at least I've never saw one (not that I'm an expert of any sort). I'm not sure if it's from a single piece but it would...

In my travels this weekend I stopped at a tag sale and saw this box of wood sitting off to the side. A little haggling with the seller and it was mine for $8. The box is 24"x18"x6.5",weighs about 25lbs, and is filled with offcuts and shorts of what appears to be exceptionally dense wood. At...
  11. Hand Tools
I am sure someone will make me feel a bit dumb here, but I really don't mind at this point. I have had this little hand tool for so long, I don't even remember where it came from. The top of the (blade?) is marked TOSCO, and I can only assume it is some sort of carving or woodworking tool but I...

Does anyone know what the tool below is used for? (And don't say a tin opener!) I sourced it from an antique shop near Dundee, Scotland.

I was playing with my planer today and finally cleaned up a dresser top that I found along the road. It was too wide to fit through my planer, so I had to cut it at 12 inches. So what is it? It's got some nice figuring in it and even when planed to 1/2 inch it has some weight to it. The photos...

Here's another mystery wood for you. All I know about this wood is this, This is from some shipping pallets, they SHOULD be from South America. The wood is heavier than oak, pretty hard, and is very waxy. The wood feels like it was coated in a liberal coating of beeswax.

This is my first post and I am glad to be a new member to the site. Last year I went to a auction of the estate of an older deceased cabinet maker. I acquired this man's table saw, which reads 1991 on the manufactures plate and is in great shape. The manual, that was with the saw is for the...
