  1. The Submarine Lure

I made a fishing lure with diving planes like those on the conning tower of a submarine. The idea was for it to dive deep but stay horizontal, like a sub's mid body planes. Ah…. didn't work. The behavior of the lure is unstable. But, the carving of a piece of Maple and the paint job ain't bad...
  2. Deep Diving Crankbait

Another Crankbait. This time a deep diver (the long bill does this). I seem to have gone from posting furniture to fishing lures here. My interests often go through phases. Thing is I can crank out a crankbait (see what I did there?) in about three to four hours. Much easier than making a...
  3. A few more maple lures

Just a few more topwater lures turned on the lathe out of maple spindle stock. Twin glass rattles added to the tail section and a lead belly weight added to help them sit right in the water and wake the fish up. Excited to toss them in the lake this weekend. Hope they inspire you turners out...
  4. A Lipless Crankbait in Maple

Today I made a lipless crankbait. It's made out of hard maple. I used it because I wanted a sinker and with dense wood you can add less ballast to get it to drop. There is a video of the build and also getting it wet here. It's only about 10 minutes long should you care to see it. Small...
  5. Giant sputterbug lure

The body with the 1/2" thick aluminum hook hangers is 30" long, Made from basswood . Has 2- 1/4" glass eyes. The prop and front shaft is all aluminum, 17" long. The vinal skirt is 25" long. The hooks are Mustard 20/0 treble hooks. It's just over 6 foot long.
  6. Experimental hinged swimbait

I've made a lure that is a segmented bait with hinges. Thing is it has two hinges but four pivot points. (you'll see in the video). The motion is almost fluid like. It's a rough build. In fact I wasn't even going to paint it, just make it to see if it worked. I decided to finish it up anyway...
  7. My first crankbait from scratch

About a month ago I decided I wanted to fish with some of my own lures. I spent a long time researching how to make a crankbait. Youtube certainly is a great way to learn stuff. Well, it's about a month later. A bunch of new tools, and armed to going from making beds and benches to a wood...
  8. Making my second Crankbait

Well, I made my second crankbait. I posted the first and it came out pretty good but I messed up on the epoxy mix and it never dried and probably never will. So, I decided to remake it. this time measuring the epoxy correctly. Yes it hardened and yes I took a couple of casts and it wobbles and...
  9. Giant split back jitterbug frog lure

This lure is 27" long an weighs about 20 lbs. Its made from basswood. The Bill is 1/16" thick aluminum that i made and I also made the hook hanger out of aluminum. The hooks are real hooks made by Mustad, they are 20/0 hooks. The lure was airbrushed and it has 23 coats of lacquer. I am making...
  10. Deep diving crankbait

This is the third bait I've made. Some differences are shape, deep diving bill, through wire, and carved gills. It's carved out of pine and painted with an airbrush Here is a link to my youtube channel showing the build
  11. Three cranks made today

Today I made three new baits. All of pine. I make everything except the hooks. They are like little, quick, art projects. Pine, carving, painting, clear coating, fishing. I have a video that shows their build from start to finish, and them in the water at the end.
  12. My first Foiled Perch lure

I've been wanting to make a foiled lure for some time now. I'd never made one. Foiling is what it says. Putting foil, in this case household tin foil, on the sides of a lure to embed scale markings into it. It went pretty good for my first one. As usual, I make everything but the hooks. BTW...
  13. Yet another Lure: Crayfish pattern

I have a crank bait I made early on that has a really nice action, a deep thumping movement. I'm duplicating it with different paint patterns. This one is a sort crayfish pattern… sort of. Made of cedar. Everything is handmade except the hooks. This is a video of the entire process.
  14. Howdy Doody Lure

Well, I humbly post a video of a lure build that just didn't work. Looks half decent but I probably won't be fishing it. I'll try again though at some point. A very humbling video ensues.
  15. Crappie Crank Bait

A relatively simple carving and paint job on this crappie crank bait. It's made of the same piece of pine I've used for most of my baits from a tree I cut down in the early 70's. Painting is done with an airbrush. Everything except the hooks are handmade. If you're interested in the video of...
  16. And yet another fishing lure: Green Crankbait

Really getting into this bait making now. This is my fourth one. I get it from piece of pine to ready to paint in about an hour. It's so nice to work on something that fits in the palm of my hand instead of something I need two people to move around to work on it! I will have to wait till...
  17. Tiny Twitch Baits with Flashabou

Out in the shop today. Decided to make a sort of little twitch bait for early in the season when Ice goes out in the spring here at the lake. It's about fifteen degrees here in Maine today. These are very small, but with a little detail. Hard to work on, carve, detail painting, etc, as they're...
  18. Jitterbug'ish copy

As a kid I fished with jitterbugs a lot. I've still got a very old and failing one in my tackle box from 50+ years ago. I decided to make myself one the other day. It's made of cedar and has a frog motif to it. It's a top water lure and pops back and forth when retrieved. As usual everything is...
  19. Vintage Fishing Lure Shadow Box

When I was given my grandfather's old tackle box I knew I should make a shadow box to display the old lures. Most everything in the tackle box is from around the 1970's, so I wanted to use some old barn wood witch was from an old barn he had salvaged as well. For the frame I mitered the corners...
  20. Lipless Crankbait using chrome paint

Yet another pandemic bait. Can't wait for ice out. A lipless crankbait with a new chrome paint called spazstiks. Made of cedar (an old deck board). As usual I make everything but the hooks. BTW….I do make other things besides baits you know. Look at my gallery. I've got a combo dresser/changing...
