  1. Projects Wooden Wood Lathe

Having some fun in the shop, I decided to make an item of interest when I attend various woodturning and woodworking shows. I stripped down a Penn State Industries Turncraftor Commander midi lathe for parts. I wanted this lathe to be fully functional so i need the motor, motor controller...
  2. Workshop Latest addition to the shop!

Previously posted the whole shop, but here's the latest addition. Looking forward to adding these capabilities to the woodworking projects.
  3. Projects Walnut Platter (Video)

I recently took a class through my local woodturners association for platter making (The Ash one in the last picture). I enjoyed it, and I've had some 6/4 walnut for a while now, and thought this would be a good use for it. I'm not really in to live edge, really, so it didn't bother me 😁 The...
  4. Projects Scrap Wood Bowl

Just having fun with a block of scrap. I think I like it!
  5. New Member Introductions
New to this and thank you for letting me on the site! My father was a prolific woodworker, carpenter, carver, leatherworker, electrician, and pretty much anything else that you could do with your hands, some brains, and hard work. Hope to meet some other folks in Northeastern Oklahoma (Tulsa...
  6. Woodturning
I have a small Wen lathe (LA3421 8"x13") and I'm getting a ton of vibration. This is my second lathe, something happened to the motor on my first one (same model) and it would bog down the second a tool touched the wood. But with my lathe now, I'm getting a bunch of vibration. I bolted it to a...
  7. Power Tools, Hardware and Accessories
I'm thinking of buying an older wood lathe (circa 1980). It has a #1 MT on the head/tail stock. It also has 3/4" X 16 TPI threads on the spindle. How much of a minus is this in terms of availability of currently available accessories?
  8. Projects Yarn Bowl from Monkey Pod

Yarn bowl made from monkey pod wood for my wife's birthday. Turning the bowl on the lathe was pretty straight forward, but cutting the spiral slot was tricky. I tried using a Dremel, then carving gouges. but couldn't keep a smooth curve. Ended up cutting a thin kerf using a coping saw, then...
  9. New Member Introductions
Hello. Just popping in to introduce myself. I finally know what i want to be when i grow up (turning 50 this year!). A craftsman. I've spent the last 30+ years as a USMC Vet (13 years in) and IT consultant. I’ve grown tired of managing people and working behind a desk and hope to do this as...
  10. Projects Goncalo Alves Honey Pot

This 5.5x3.5” Honey Pot is Goncalo Alves or commonly referred to as Brazilian Tigerwood. The wood is almost twice as hard as oak and very oily in nature. Block had one crack that I stabilized but it still showed up when finished.
  11. Projects Spalted Burl Myrtle Bowl

This is a 7.5x3” bowl that I purchase the blank from last summer from Cook woods in Oregon.
  12. Projects California Buckeye Burl Bowl

Bowl is a 6x3” Buckeye Burl with a live edge
  13. Projects Marble Padauk Bowl 8x3”

Bowl is 8x3” African Marble Padauk. The wood was very dry before turning which is why it has many cracks.
  14. Projects Bowl??

My son brought home a random branch of wood from a hike he took in the hills above Oceanside, CA. It was an odd shaped crotch offcut, but it had wonderful spalting. This was the best shape I could make from it. Is it a 3-sided bowl? Is it a small tray with 3 high sides? Is it a hat, a brooch, or...
  15. Projects Salad Bowl from Brazilian Pepper Tree

When I arrived to work one day last year I saw that they were cutting down the Brazilian Pepper Trees that had been growing there since the 1950's. I saved a few pieces from the chipper and, after about a year of drying, made this salad bowl from one for my mother for Christmas. I filled the...
  16. Projects Olive Bowl / Tray

A neighbor had some more olive rounds from a tree he had removed from his yard years ago (see earlier posts for more of this wood). He had been using these rounds as stepping stones in his garden. But, he realized the wood might be pretty, so asked if I could do anything with them. I used epoxy...
  17. Projects Little chair for a very special little girl

This is a variation of a little chair I designed and build for my grandson a couple of years ago. The original design was cut on a CNC and made out of plywood. This one was built using ½" Red Oak dimensional stock leftovers I had from another project (circular dining table base - will post...
  18. Projects Morado Bowl

This 5.5x2” bowl is known as Bolivian Rosewood or Morado. Unknown actual name but it appears comes from South America and the wood has extremely high oil content. This is another bowl I turned a month ago but it would not take a finish. Due to so many coats of lacquer and sanding between, brand...

This 7x1” plate is Australian Brown Mallee “cookie” Burl. A cookie is a slice of wood between the Burl cap and the tree.
