This was a "commissioned" piece for my inlaws.
I ebonized the poplar using black TransTint dye and India Ink.
First coat Dye/ink in Zinsser Seal coat.
Second coat Dye/ink in 50% ethanol.
Third coat Dye/ink in seal coat again.
I ended with a few coats of Arm-R-Seal.
"My Tell-Tale Heart" box series was designed and created to celebrate my younger brother's wedding. Right from the start I knew I wanted to make them a special box. They got married on Halloween which was a big influence on the design. Taken from one the most famous pieces of gothic...
This is another bow saw made with the kit from Gramercy Tools. The previous I had made into a swan neck, this time I wanted to follow their original design. I toyed with making it out of ebony because I had seen a beautiful one on the internet but opted not to because of cost. I had been...
Here is the poor man's version of ebonizing wood!
10 parts water to 1 part black latex paint
sand down raised grain
seal it up
I almost got in trouble with this because the water made my drawers expand and I had to sand them back down to a very snug fit. The result is pretty decent...
About a month ago I was inspired to make this box. It took a total of 30 days from start to finish to make it. I believe this is the hardest project to date to make. Every piece had to be custom made, all the angle cuts drove me crazy to say the least. I used a 1/2" hand wood chisel to do all...
This is a White Oak coat rack that I made with custom ebonized hooks.
Shelf was installed with a dado joint and the support is a french cleat.
Hooks are ebonized with first a coat of strong black tea and then a steel wool/vinegar mixture. I also blacked the screws with super blue.
We were given a 40" TV from my in-laws (won in a raffle). The problem was we had an "old style" TV stand that didn't fit one of these "new fangled" flat panel TV's. So our new TV sat on a couple TV trays butted together for a while.
I decided on the Woodsmith issue #169 Wide-Screen TV Cabinet...
Note: Originally posted in October 2007 to my woodworking blog at www.affyx.com which was a just a redirect link to Blogger - well the big brains at blogger have tagged my site as a "spam blog" (it isn't) and although I've asked for it to be reinstated, I think LJ might be a better place to...
The table top is heart pine that was harvested from Eglin Air Force Base after a hurricane. The base is poplar that has been ebonized using India Ink. The reverse taper leg idea came from the following project. http://lumberjocks.com/projects/58392
This marble machine has 2 lifters, 4 paths (nail board, slalom with tipping lever, bell track and clickclock tower, bottleneck), a tipover container for 150 marbles and a "sound box" filled with bells, gongs, springs, woodblocks, etc. The marbles will be transported with the "Cateye wheel" to a...
I had a bunch of tools just laying on the shelf beneath my bench that was a driving me crazy so I decided to make a set of drawers to organize and declutter the shelf. My neighbor was cleaning out their attic and gave me a couple of old table leaves that I decided to use to make the chest. The...
This was inspired by a torso carving in a book by Dick Onias. I took certain liberties, but the pose is very similar. I like the subtle twist at the waist and the effect that lifting the left arm has on the chest.
I made it out of a chunk of Bradford Pear that broke out of our tree. I hate...
These are sister-in-law gifts. The design is inspired by Philip Weber. He has many imaginatively designed and beautifully crafted boxes http://weberboxes.com. The top is curved. The boxes are of Yellowheart and ebonized walnut and of maple with ebonized walnut...
My latest infill.
#4 size, length is 9", width is 2".
Metal is low carbon steel from mcmaster carr.
Infill is ebonized walnut. The reason for the ebonizing was "just to try something different". I seen one I liked that was ebonized walnut, and I had walnut.
Iron is a Hock.
Chip breaker is 1/8"...
Sorry for the poor pics, it was hard to capture this in a good light. It's made from solid ash usinf dados, half laps and Miller dowels (I love these things). Shelves are adjustable. Face frame is a glued on, no biscuits or anything.
I have not added the back yet, but it will be a black 1/4...
I finished one desk!!! But it looks very much like table.
I wanted to use this one for lap top computer. If there is no drawer, it must be a table.
Made with walnut, ebonized walnut, and maple. Drawer is hidden as apron and made with cherry.
17×34 x 31
This time… tried dark wood combination.

I know how to ebonize wood. What I would like to do is highlight the wood grain (I'm using oak) in white. It's a technique called cerusing but I have not been successful so far. Here's what I've tried to date:
- Ebonized the wood using a highly concentrated tea to add tannin then painting...
