This is a guitar built for Bill Kitchens in Atlanta, Georgia. It's made of Cocobola with an Adirondack Spruce Top. Acoustically, and aesthetically, it may be my best work to date.
This one made me remember why I like doing this. Lately I have been making work to sell, but this one is for my wife's parents 50th anniversary and when I'm making one with someone in mind I have a lot more fun. I combined some different methods that I have used in some of the other pieces...
Just posting a few of my recent lathe projects that I made for Christmas gifts.
Just your run of the mill project kits from Rockler and Woodcraft. My family and friends love when Christmas comes around. By now, they just expect gifts from my wood shop each year. These have been a nice break...
These four making gauges were made from brass ones that I purchased. I turned down the brass to my original dimensions and then turned the wood cover from exotic woods to dress them up. I was told by a friend that African black wood is " chiippy"...that it is brittle and chips break off. I did...
Koa main body, with a Cocobolo ring. Each segment of the Cocobolo ring is separated by maple veneer to create an outline. The bowl is 6" diameter. I only had a small piece of Koa, and originally planned to turn out a solid bowl, but couldn't stand the thought of turning that much Koa into...
This one ended up being real challenge to finish. I have to admit I might have bit off more than I could chew on this one. It has 387 pieces and ranges from 3 in to ½ in depth. I have never been so ready to finish a project. All the pieces, spacers, and gluing all were very difficult on this...
Well here is something you don't see to often or ever. I made these vent vanes from cocobola wood that I sliced 1/8th. in thick. I then made a jig that took 1/8th in. teflon rod and formed a 1/16th in. pin on the end that I inserted into the ends of the vane. This makes up the hinging point and...
This was a fun one to make because I love to add real life things into my projects to make them look more real. Using some old rusty chains, hooks, some old rope with the the fence made from our old deck we tore down last year. I did not sand or do anything to the old deck to make it look like...
I needed to fill my ring box for the July show so I turned these today out of a variety of woods.
The top 6 are Hard Maple Burl…. there are many shades in that burl.. The bottom row are, left to right :Cocobola, Rosewood, Madrone and Artificial Ivory.
When I put them on the mandrel and put...
This is more stock replenishment . They are made from a variety of wood laying around the shop.
I finally ran out of magnets and had to lay off the elves.
From Left to right. top row: 1-4 are osage orange, 5&6 are mesquite with yellow sap wood included.
2nd row: 1 is box elder, 2&4 are...
Sorta bored on a Sunday, so I broke out a box of slimline pen kits and this is the result!
From left to right:
Cocobola
East Indian Rosewood with an Oak band
Cypress
Cypress with an oak swirl line (oak line is difficult to see in the pic)
Sweet Acacia (Huisache)
East Indian Rosewood, Oak and...
I am making a small jewelry box out of cocobola. Here is the rub: The sides are angled 30 degrees. That of course is making glue up difficult. I have not started to glue yet, but my dry runs show me it is going to be difficult to get the proper "pressure" in the right places, for the right...
I noticed these 2 boxes of walnut on eBay. By my calculations , with shipping, the cost is $8.59 and $6.49 /bdft respectively. Why not just go to the lumber store and get what you need if you are paying that much?
Just curious?
i was trying to figure out the best way to get wood to shine, and glow, without using any oils, varnish, or polish. i figure the best finish, was natural. im just having a hard time getting the sheen that i want. any input?
