  1. Spalted Molly

I carved this lady in a piece of Spalted Maple. As many of you may know, a piece of wood becomes "spalted' due to the introduction and decomposition of the wood from fungus. The different types of fungus give the wood its' various colors. No artist will ever be a match for the beauty that Mother...
  2. Cane, Walking Stick, Wood Spirit Carving by Josh Carte

I carved this cane from some materials that my grandpa gave me before he passed. He and I shared a love of woodworking, and he left me with quite a few supplies and tools. He liked to make canes, but they were nothing like my whimsical style. This cane is made of sassafras and the horn is from a...
  3. Eagle Pierced- Relief Carving

I carved this scene in a piece of Cherry. There is some natural bark on the top and a bit of burl throughout. This carving is 8" tall, 18" wide and 2" thick. This style of carving is called, "pierced relief". It is quite a time consuming style of carving, but very rewarding. I began shaping...
  4. Big Leaf Maple burl, Wood Spirit Carving

I'm really diggin' this new fella'. This is my newest woodcarving made from a piece of Big Leaf Maple burl. I love this wood because of its' wonderful, unique shapes and ability to hold detail. The shape of this carving reminds me of one of the clocks from "Beauty and the Beast".
  5. A Happy Wood Spirit Carving :)

This fella' is just happy to be alive and kicking. He zipped up his pants, tucked in his shirt and put a smile on this morning. This carving measures 11" tall x 4" wide x 3" thick. I carved and painted this piece entirely by hand from a single piece of wood. The wood used for carving this guy is...
  6. Walking stick, Wood Spirit Carving

I just finished this happy, hiking helper today. I'm not certain of the wood species as this piece was peeled already when a friend gave it to me. The natural color of the wood is very similar to another walking stick that I carved made of Sassafras. This stick has aged for several years, so it...
  7. Native American Indian, Woodcarving, by Josh Carte

I carved this expressive Native American from a piece of Cottonwood bark. I enjoy the challenge of shaping this soft bark. It is the polar opposite of shaping the knots and burls that I often use. Each type of wood brings its' own unique challenges. This guy measures 7" tall, 3 1/2" wide and 3...
  8. He couldn't be any happier, Knot Carving

Carved this character in a Hemlock knot… This guy just looks so happy, so blissful. I don't think that he could be any happier. It's amazing to me how much emotion we are able to convey by the simplest expressions :) https://www.etsy.com/shop/JoshCarteArt This guy will be listed on ebay-...
  9. Cottonwood Bark Carving, Josh Carte, Native American

This Native American is carved from a piece of Cottonwood bark. I carved him using rotary hand tools and painted with acrylics. This piece measures 7 1/2" tall, 4" wide, and 2 1/2" thick. This guy took several sittings to complete, but I'm now happy that I was patient :) Hope you like him.
  10. Driftwood Sculpture, Wood Spirit Carving

He's neither happy nor sad….He's perpetually apathetic…Poor guy. He could really use a hug or quite possibly some antidepressants. He lives his life half-alive. He's far past the days of extreme emotional ups and downs. He just can no longer bear another heartache. Maybe soon, things will change...
  11. Wild Wizard in Driftwood

I carved this wild wizard from a piece of gnarly driftwood. This piece is around 20" tall, 4" wide and 2" thick. This guy looks pretty irritated, huh?! As usual, I carved him with my Foredom rotary tool. I did all of the painting with acrylics and tiny little paint brushes :)
  12. Client's Friend's Face Woodcarving

A very good client of mine asked me to carve my version of one of his dearest friends. He didn't care about how I interpreted the pictures he gave me, he just wanted what I had to offer. He said I could be as creative as I like and take whatever approach I wanted. I decided to place "Donald" in...
  13. YOU ARE BANISHED! Woodcarving by Josh Carte

I created this carving from a piece of Cherry driftwood. It looks to me that this fella' is saying, " You are banished!!!!," in his loudest and deepest voice :) Goin' mess around and get yo'self blacklisted. Carving faces is quite a unique challenge but I love it. Lately, I've been working on...
  14. Eagle Chainsaw Carving, by Josh Carte

I haven't done much chainsaw carving lately… I reworked and finished this eagle yesterday. He's a little shinier than what I prefer, but he will last a long time outdoors this way- kinda like having lots of extra sunscreen :) I used a couple of different chainsaws to shape up this eagle. I then...
  15. Hobo Joe, Wood Carving by Josh Carte

"Hobo Joe" is carved from a piece of Big Leaf Maple Burl. This type of wood does not grow in my neck of the woods, so I have to order it. I almost feel like I'm cheating when I have to buy wood because I enjoy gathering my own so much :) I love the natural texture and shape of these beautiful...
  16. Lovely Lass, Female Wood Spirit Carving, Josh Carte

I don't carve a lot of female spirits, but this lady was pretty fun to shape up…. She is carved from a Hemlock knot. I didn't paint a base color on this carving like I often do. Instead, I left the wood natural and accented with different shades of brown. This piece measures 6 1/2" tall x 2 1/4"...
  17. Walking Stick, Wood Spirit Carving, by Josh Carte

This walking stick/cane is carved from a piece of Sassafras. The hand piece at the top is carved from a piece of Curly Maple. The hand piece at the top and a little exposed wood at the bottom are dyed orange. The hand piece and the stick are joined using a tenon and mortise joint and glue- very...
  18. Over-eater, Driftwood Carving, Josh Carte

This fella' just doesn't know when enough is enough. I've heard of folks having eyes larger than their bellies, but this guy is taking it to a whole new level :) I carved this unique, free-standing sculpture from a piece of driftwood. It is 6 1/2" tall x 7" wide x 2 1/2" thick. I used rotary...
  19. Big Leaf Maple Burl, Wood Spirit Carving

I love the natural shape and pins of Big Leaf Maple Burls. I've accumulated quite a pile of these things in my garage- they are nature's art to me. Each one is so different and beautiful. This one is quite large measuring 18" tall and 13" wide, with a thickness of around 3 1/2". In case you...
  20. Wood Spirit Face Carving

I carved this bearded fellow in a large piece of Pine knot. He is around 15 1/2" tall and 9" wide. I carve using a Foredom, which is an electric rotary tool with various burrs and grinders. I finished this carving using an oil wash. His eyes are painted with a bit of blue- something a little...
