  1. Bowling league 2022

My contribution to the swap. I made a segmented bowl out of quartersawn red oak and purpleheart/maple accent ring and a bloodwood bolt action pen. For kicks I also sent a ready to turn bowl blank. One picture shows my setup for cutting segments and another shows how I turn the bottoms.
  2. Bowling League Entry

Toothpick and Stand Cherry 'pic and stand. Copper stand arms. Finished down to 400 grit paper, then down to 2000 grit emery cloth. 7 coats of tung oil over 7 days, with 0000 steel wool between coats. Wipe on poly for protection, then a coat of paste wax. Yes, I am kidding. Lopsided Bowl...
  3. Bowling League 2022

My contribution to the Bowling Swap 2022. My first attempt at a segmented bowl, and the largest turned item. It's 10" Dia x 5" high. Layered with Cherry, Walnut and Maple. It was a fun learning exercise making up the segment rings then gluing the rings together. My press for gluing, just 2...
  4. Bangin' Away for the Bowling League

We are wrapping up the first LJs swap of 2022 - The 2022 Bowling League Turning Swap. The swap theme wasn't really bowls but turning in general. And I figure most turners probably have bowls to spare, I decided to go a different direction with my package. I had an idea for a machinists hammer...
  5. Bowling League 2022

My contribution to the swap Picture #1 is what I call a No Hinge Band saw Box - It is actually one of the cut outs from a wine rack that I make. It's the piece taken out where the bottle sits in the rack. Picture #2 is the cut out from the box in picture #1 and it ends up another No Hinge...
  6. Bowling League 2022 Beer "glass"

I had such great ideas for this swap. BTW if you have not joined a swap you should - it will push your limits and you will learn a lot. I made a small Movingui Salt bowl just to be sure I'd have something to ship if my invention failed. Shown here in the hand of my recipient JD77 because I...
  7. Too Much Circles (flask)

As a bonus for the 2022 Bowling League Swap, I made a flask. It's constructed of white oak, curly cherry, and ash (for the stopper), with bits of olive, red oak and something else I don't remember in the smallest circles. It holds about a U.S. pint (half litre). The name comes from one of the...
  8. Juniper segmented faux-ringmaster bowl

For the 2022 Bowling League swap, I set off to make a segmented bowl in the RingMaster style. I started by gluing up a bunch of wedges of juniper. Well, actually, I started by building a platform of pine scraps on a faceplate. Then I built two layers of juniper wedges on top of the pine base...
  9. Bowl and Pens

For the latest swap I made a bowl out of a magnolia log. The log came from Moss Bluff, LA after the first hurricane that hit in 2020. I was able to grab it when I was down there with minuteman disaster response helping with the clean up. I used my bandsaw to saw a flat on the log. I screwed my...
  10. Bowling League 2022 toothpick holders

Saw the original posting about this swap and had to think about joining in. Then I get a PM from Mike personally inviting me to participate and the rest, as they say, is history. The thread said the items needed to be at least somewhat bowl shaped and lathe turning was mentioned. Then all the...
  11. Swap Bowl and Bit Holder

This is a bowl from a board made with a Ringmaster for the winter turning swap. This is made from yellow poplar with walnut stripes and mystery wood wedges. The mystery wood looks like cherry now that it is finished but was much lighter before finishing. I drew up a cutting plan in Sketchup...

  13. 2022 Bowling League Swap - Twisted Shakers

Somebody said that we needed to try something new with this swap and really push ourselves. I may have taken it too far. I got the inspiration from a few youtube videos and a website (www.marchland.org/woodturning/list.htm) that explained how to get a twisted tapered turning. Given the amount...
