  1. Projects Blanket chest in walnut and cedar

A blanket chest I made for my brother's wedding. Interesting note: Next to the third dovetail on the right, you can see a discolored spot. That's the remnants of a round fired into the tree and exposed by a pass on the planer (glad it wasn't jacketed). Polished it up and left it in.
  2. Projects Blanket Chest.

Made the blanket chest from plans from the New Yankee Workshop, using pine lumber & honey pine stain. The top features breadboard edges.
  3. Projects Reclaimed Cedar Blanket Chest

So a couple of years ago I completed a deck replacement at my house, and when I removed the old (painted red) decking, handrails, fascia, etc., I realized they were all cedar. I saved a couple of pieces, planed them all down and went to work. The result was this Blanket Chest with Antique Handles.
  4. Projects Dovetailed Blanket Chest

Made this chest for a wedding present. First project I tackled where I hand cut dovetails. Don't look too close. : )
  5. Hope Chest

This is a hope chest I made for my Grand-niece (I am her surrogate "Grand-pa" as both her real grandpa's are deceased). Made of solid quarter-sawed white oak with eastern red cedar lining, and features removable trays, one which has a locking top. Dimensions are 40" long x 20" tall x 18" deep...
  6. Blanket Chest - Mission / Art&Crafts Style

When I found the plans for this Mission / Arts & Crafts Blanket Chest in Wood Magazine (Feb./March 2005), I just knew that it would just look great sitting next to my first big furniture project, the Barrister's Bookcase and it would provide additional temporary seating as a bench. As with the...
  7. 17th Century Blanket Chest

All, Here are a couple of pictures of a nice blanket chest I built earlier this year for our local church auction. Wood is Western Red Cedar salvaged from the remodel of Arrowhead Stadium here in Kansas City. The plans are available along with several video's on Tommy MacDonald's website...
  8. Another Wedding, another Blanket Chest

Built from Poplar, and keeping with the spirit of the "old design" I built it the old way with a combination of hand and power tools. I used square nails to fasten the front and back to avoid wood movment issues. Hand scraped the entire thing, then stained and shellaced it .The bride and groom...

  10. Cherry craftsman style blanket chest/toy box

Made two of these bad boys awhile back, a blanket chest for a customer and a toy box for my daughter. They were identical. I went ahead and lined them both with aromatic cedar thinking that one day that toy box will become a blanket chest too. (Although by then it probably won't smell pretty no...

Constructed over one week at Lonnie Bird's School in Dandridge, TN. Simple, but enjoyable design. I plan to...
  14. Blanket Chest for my Daughter

When my wife and I found out we would have a daughter I knew that I would be building her many things throughout her life. When we found out that we had lost her at 22 weeks I knew I had to have something for us that would hold everything we had of her during her short life. I thought a blanket...
  15. Raised Chest

A shaker style "boarded" chest made from taphole maple. This was adapted from one in the (excellent) Thomas Moser book "How to Build Shaker Furniture" but I've made quite a few changes. I changed his overlay doors to inset ones (done with a bit of maloof-style added to the web frames) and used...
  16. Half lap Blanket Chest (April 2013)

I wanted to try something different than my previous blanket chests. So, I went with a half lap design. All exposed joinery. Floating hardwood 3/4" plywood bottom. Table saw cove cut on the lid. No stain as it was made to match the loft bed build I made previously. The total cost is a few cents...

  18. Blanket chest with two generations of cherry

I started this as a christmas present for my daughter in Oct 2009. I was able to get the lumber milled and the legs cut before winter kept me out of my shop. I got back in in Spring and worked off and on for a couple of months when I had a ATV accident which kept me out of the shop until the...

  20. Blanket Chest / Seat

Blanket Chest for the wife. She asked for it months ago and I decided it would be my first style and rail build. Bought a Jet bench top mortise machine, practiced… and got to work. Had trouble finding pine boards wide enough for the front and back panels.. so I used poplar. I am at peace...
