  1. Wedding Automaton

This is a present for a recently married couple based on some of their wedding photos. They were married in a Scottish Castle with pipers and kilts, daffodils and snow.
  2. Animated Holiday Table Decoration

This is something I put together for the Holiday 2014 issue of Scroll Saw Woodworking and Crafts. I skipped Thanksgiving and went directly to Christmas. A little early, but why not? A lot of the stores around here are lumping Halloween/Thanksgiving/Christmas into a single marketing blitz...
  3. "Thunderbolt"

The legend of "Thunderbolt" All the kids knew the stories about the horse called Thunderbolt. He was big and strong, with a unique style of bucking, and a strong dislike of humans. Thunderbolt was a mechanical horse that sat in front of the dime store, beautiful and shiny, like a magnet for...
  4. "Wobbly Gnome"

I carved a slightly larger gnome than my usual ones so I could add some extra details, and I decided to make a little toy out of him. I was playing with him trying to figure out what kind of motion would work and I decided on kind of a wobbling from side to side was kind of funny. It doesn't...

  7. Monkey riding a tricycle & eating a banana.

The idea for this came from a picture of a toy that I saw for sale on eBay that was from the late 1800's. It's made of plywood and dowels. My first attempt, which is hidden in the background, looked more like a cat than a monkey. So I plan to exchange the banana for a fish.
  8. Monkey Eating a Banana - Automata

This was copied from a kit that is sold in the UK @ http://www.timberkits.com . But I think they copied it or got the idea from a 1921 newspaper automaton. Link to short video -
  9. Begging Monkey Automata

I used an old news paper pattern from 1920's for this. The motion is not as fluid as I would like (the original was designed to be made of paper, where mine is wood). When his tail is pushed down both hands and his head lift up. I also had to enlarge the head as the one in the original pattern...
  10. Hand-cranked Woman is Boss wood model

A couple years ago, I built several whirligigs. One of those is called The Woman is the Boss and is a fun one to watch. I like to design and build hand-cranked toys for kids, but I have built so many that I have sort of run out of ideas on new ones. I got the idea that I could convert some of...
  11. Hand-cranked model of man Crank Starting a Model T

To make another hand-cranked toy for children, I modified the whirligig design….......by replacing the propellor with a hand-cranked gear set. I used a 3:1 gear reduction ratio, which seems to work about right. The gears are red oak, along with the vertical gear mounting piece, and base. The...
  12. Another Woozle Bird hatched!

I showed my version of the Woozlebird (see https://www.lumberjocks.com/projects/418744) during a Zoom meeting with a group of friends from the hand-turned organ group - BOGA - and one of them, Terry Pankhurst, decided he would like to get a set of the plans and make one of his own. He...

I have built quite a collection of wood hand-cranked toys, close to 50 total. I take them to family and community events several times a year…...........and the kids…......as well as the adults love them. I have about run out of ideas of new hand-cranked designs to build. One of my...
