  1. Prime Mover

Except for my lay up through health problems you may have noticed the lack of projects from me well this is what I have been working on. This has been built for a woodworking magazine article. This took longer than expected due to the health problems, but I was not going to give in. I had a...
  2. Remington 600 stock made with Black Walnut and Wild Cherry

I just finished this black walnut and cherry, thumbhole stock. It's going on a Remington 600 in .308. The stock was sanded to 180 grit and a couple of coats of tung oil have been wet sanded to fill the grain. It's ready for final sanding. The little dings and nicks that are present don't...
  3. 'A' String

or 'oh no, now he's doing it with curves' (Thanks, Kate) This is a 'shell' box. 125mm square by 60mm high (overall). Top wall thickness 4.5mm, base wall thickness 3mm. Made from American Black Walnut with Pau Amarello stringing. Glue is PVA and finish Wax over Sanding Sealer. A chance to...
  4. Kernov style block plane

Kernov style block plane- curly American black walnut veneer outer with sapele core which came from an offcut from my mother-in-law's kitchen worktop and an ebony base. The wedge is beech spalting. The wedge didn't hold the blade securely so I added a brass thumbscrew to hold it.
  5. Marking gauge

Dowel centre finder- redwood core with American black walnut veneer. The blade is from an old aluminium ruler I had lying around.
  6. American Black Walnut gunstock for a Remington 600

A few weeks ago, I uploaded a couple of projects for Remington 600 stocks carved from laminated and colored birch. The laminates were made by Ruttland Plywood and that type of laminate is what almost all the custom stock carvers use to make laminated stocks. This is the same type stock, but...
  7. Black Cherry & American Black Walnut gunstock for a Remington 600

This stock is very much like the other thumbhole stocks I've carved to fit a Remington 600/660 rifle. This one is one of my favorites. It's wild cherry on the outside and black walnut and cherry on the inside laminates. The cherry has a lot of grain and color showing. I've wet sanded it with...
  8. Walnut varmint stock for a Mauser 98

This stock was carved from a huge American Black Walnut blank. Too bad there wasn't room in the blank to carve two stocks. "The blank was quartersawn and shows some fiddleback. I only sanded the stock to 120 grit and rubbed in one thin coat of tung oil. When the stock is finish sanded to at...
  9. Wild Cherry and Black Walnut Gunstock for a 22 rimfire

I carved this stock today from a beautiful piece of wild cherry. The butt has beautiful crotch feather and the stock forward of the grip is quartersawn straight grain for strength and stability. The original stock was split and cracked in several places, but it was good enough to use as a...
  10. Hand Tools
I've had this for years.. No company name cast into the body, no numbers either. I took it apart and found "Edgewood Tools" stamped on the blade assembly… It seems to be a Stanley clone of some sort. Comments?
  11. Wood & Lumber
I just got done cutting up a 100 year old hickory that was partially felled in a recent storm. I'm going to have a large portion of the trunk cut up at the mill, but was wondering about the limb pieces. I have a lot of wood from the limbs cut up that I'd love to use for bandsaw boxes. However...

WHERE'S ME CLIPBOARD! As I'm sure I've mentioned before I do a fairly mundane day job, stacking shelves. One of the main tools for this is a clipboard, to hold my picklist. It invariably goes missing. Either I leave it in a trolley somewhere or, worse still, somebody 'borrows' it without...

What should I make with this raw material? I've got some small pieces of wood that are left over from making blanks to carve gunstocks. They are too nice to burn and a little too small for bigger projects. The walnut strip is 11 3/4" in length, 3 5/8" tall and 1 7/8" wide. It could be used...
