When applying wax... - 3 replies

I’m new to the whole paste wax thing so I have a question. I will be trying a danish oil/ paste wax finish. How many coats of wax should I put on after the danish oil? Also an answer I never seem to find in articles… When applying multiple coats of wax, should each coat be buffed after applying or do I apply a couple layers then buff...

im getting ready to do the finish on a few boxes ive made. they are made of walnut with maple tops and splines. I’ve put a couple coats of shellac on the boxes and want to apply a coat of wax over that. i dont want to use a light wax due to it showing up white in the grain of the walnut. Upper Wheel Removal for Ridgid BS14002 - 2 replies

The upper shaft-hinge broke on my band saw and I’m having a hard time getting the wheel off to get to it. Have any of you tried taking your upper wheel off of this saw? From all the research I’ve done it seems the nut should unscrew and the wheel and bearings should slide right off the axle/bolt that it’s mounted on. But when i...

Does anybody have any tips that will make aligning hinges easier for me? I’ve made a couple boxes and a toybox that require the tops to be flush with the box and I can’t get them to line up flush. Any help would be much appreciated.

Sterling Wood Lathe Model No. WL1236 ??? - 1 reply

I found a guy with one of these for sale but I can’t find any info on this thing anywhere. It’s 3/4 hp 5 speed with a full 36 in from center to center. I’ve never used a lathe and don’t know much about them. I went to the guys house to check it out. It seemed to run fine with no vibration. Had a bit of rust and a broken b...

trying a new finish - 2 replies

I’m getting ready to put the finish on a set of chest of drawers I’ve built for my son. They’re built of red oak and I’m trying to keep a natural finish on it. I read an article in woodsmith magazine showing a technique I think I’m going to try. It showed boiled linseed oil followed by shellac followed by varnish. I...

drawer bottoms - 4 replies

Hey everybody, 1 quick question. I’m making a chest of drawers and ordered 1\4” birch ply for the drawer bottoms thinking I would be getting a full quarter inch sheet. Turned out to be 3\16. Would that be strong enough or should I swap it for some full 1\4” ? The drawers are about 30×14. Thanks.

dewalt 734 or ridgid 4330 planer? - 22 replies

I’m trying to decide between these two planers. I’m kind of a ridgid fan but I want the best tool. I’ve read good and bad reviews on both of these planers and I don’t know which way to go. they are both 399 at HD. I’m going to be running rough stock through these. Seems the dewalt may have a problem with the infeed ...

deciding on jointer - 8 replies

I’m in the market for a jointer but price is an issue. I can’t buy a 4 5 or 600 dollar machine so I’ve narrowed it down. Its pretty well gonna be either a benchtop..I’ve looked at the new porter cable as well as the craftsman and grizzly models all around 250 range. The other option is the central machinery 6”..200 ...

plywood or solid wood drawers? - 10 replies

I’m working on plans for a bedroom dresser and chest-of-drawers. Would it be better to use plywood for the drawer sides or solid wood? I figure plywood would be less prone to warping but figured I’d get some input from you guys first. I would like to have dovetailed drawer sides if that makes a difference in choosing. Thanks.

ryobi ap1301 or ridgid tp4330? - 6 replies

I’m looking into buying a planer soon and not sure which one to get. I’ve read the reviews on this site on both of these planers and there’s been good things said about both. I’ve been pleased with my ridgid r4511 table saw and I plan on buying their 14” bandsaw next month so I feel that the planer would be a qualit...

building my first chest-of-drawers - 4 replies

I’m going to be building my son a chest-of-drawers soon and am designing it myself, basically taking parts here and there from other designs that I have seen and liked. I’ve got the basic idea for what I want to do but I’m not sure how I want to do the drawer guides. I know I want it to be all wood construction with no metal gu...

Newbie trying dovetails - 4 replies

I’m pretty certain this is a dumb question but here goes… While I’m not completely new to woodworking, I’m not really experienced either. Especially when it comes to joinery. I can do dados and rabbets and I’ve been practicing my mortise\tenon making and I’m doing okay with that. I started fooling around with ...
