I am a semi-retired guy who loves to do things with wood. From building/repairing fences, designing custom sheds, to making small jewelry boxes I love it all.
someone asked me once how I got my experience in wood working and it stumped me! I guess it started when I was a young newlywed many years ago. "Unfinished furniture" was a fad in the late 70's and it got me hooked! I still remember the oak ice box and herringbone coffee table I finished. In the back of my mind I started thinking maybe I could not just finish but actually design and build my own stuff.
When we bought our first house we didn't have much extra cash and I wanted to fix up my garage, so my first real construction project was to build shelving, which turned into cabinets. They worked fine but my design skills were lacking; lots of glue and nails, no dados etc. As time went on I learned more about how cabinets and such were constructed and I began to add to the equipment in my shop. My work and designs continued to improve and my finished projects reflected that. My main projects involved cabinetry and I really improved my knowledge as a kitchen/bath designer at Home Depot. They had great training at the time. Suddenly I was building wall units with corbel supported overhangs/ integrated lighting etc.
I have progressed to the point where I am doing projects for other people, even earning some side money refinishing kitchens and building stuff. Woodworking has been the most satisfying thing I have done in my varied career and I hope I have many years left to improve my skills and create more projects for me, my family, and other! I still have much to learn as I discover new and better methods every day. What a blast!
