Location: Blue Ridge Mountains of NC

One of my earliest memories is that of my mom and dad taking me with them when they went back to the shop after supper and my dad would spray finish on chair legs while my mom "tailed" for him, taking away the just sprayed chair and setting in place another to be sprayed. I remember the sounds of the spray gun and the drone of the exhaust fan when I had been put down in a cardboard box of new shop rags to sleep.

My dad had started a woodworking shop right after WWII, eventually finding his niche in manufacturing the wooden frames for upholstered chairs and sofas. I spent many days helping out at the shop as I grew older until the summer of my 13th year when I was allowed to operate a drill press drilling countersunk screw holes in the corner blocks that were used to stabilize the chair or sofa while they were in the big clamp.

I worked at various jobs in the shop through college. I went to Appalachian after a four year stint in the Air Force and one of the things I studied was woodworking. Although my career was spent in packaging printing I kept a small woodworking shop and enjoyed making whatever came up, such as my dining room table and other furniture in my home.

Now retired I have my dream workshop which, of course, is a work in progress and never finished. There is always something it needs...
