Project Information

A pen I made for a friends graduation from uni. It is a zircote wood base with a bloodwood strip running through it and the red on the end is paduck. I really lilke the combination of the dark wood with the red of the bloodwood. Although next time I think I will try putting some padauk in there, since it is even redder.

Good looking pen. How Do you make the ribbon in the wood? Run the pieces together through a fine tooth bandsaw blade or ??

I cut a random wavey line in the blank with a scrollsaw, then cut a very thin strip of something else on the band saw (in this case bloodwood). Then I sand it down to make it nice and smooth and a bit thinner. Using the two halves of the original blank as moulds I put the thin bit of wood in the middle and clamp it hard, after applying glue either wood glue or superglue. You can then optionally make other cuts in the blank and add some more wavey bits, but I think it looks better with just one after experimenting with more than one a couple of times.
