Project Information

Well, it's been a loooooong time since I've posted any projects on here…so even though I don't have the finish on this one quite figured out yet, I thought I'd go ahead and post it in it's natural state.

I started on this carving back in OCTOBER of last year (if you can believe that!!). Not that it was such a complicated carving that it took me 5 months to complete…..it just got put off between the holidays, the kids, yadda, yadda. Mostly it just sat there in the garage barely started until a couple of weeks ago, when all of a sudden I somehow got a fire lit under me to get the darn thing done. I really don't like the feeling of leaving projects unfinished (although it does seem to happen).

Anyhow, the design with the tree and the 2 wolves came from the Lora S. Irish book- Wildlife Carvings In Relief….although I did change a few things about it to sort of make it my own. The border of leaves, acorns, and twigs was also inspired by other carvings I found in the same book, but I just sort of used that as inspiration to come up with my own border and didn't copy exactly from the book. It was carved in pine, as you can probably tell.

I'm thinking about trying something a little different with the finish…so we'll see how that goes. I'll re-post it when it's DONE, done. Probably not my best carving of all, but it had been a while so this was my "getting back into the groove of carving" carving! lol! ; )

Any comments, critiques, or suggestions are welcome, and thanks for looking!

The only thing I can find wrong with your carving is it is not hanging on MY wall LOL.

Exquisite detail and beautiful work. You are blessed with a given talent. Can Keith use your picture on his sight? I would rather see a pretty girl than his ugly mug. LOL

God Bless

Wow, thanks everyone for all of the reeeealy kind comments…..I was sort of half-expecting someone to rip on me a little, or have something they didn't like or think needs to be improved, lol! Not that I'm COMPLAINING that everyone seems to think I did well on it : )

I'm playing around on mixing wood stain with some poly to create various shades from light to dark (thus giving me the color and sheen in one), then brushing it on like paint. I did the tree trunk, acorns, and leaves so far….all in different shades of the same cherry stain. I THINK I'm liking it so far….hmmmmm.
Just trying something a little different then what I've done on my other carvings in the past. I guess I could have easily just wiped on a stain and then a finish and been done. I did put alot of work into the carving, so hopefully my experimental finish won't ruin it, or make me regret doing that, lol!

Yeah, deep relief is good. Pine is hard to carve with. I always fond too that it doesn't take a dark stain so well, but that's just my experience because I always use a transparent stain. Do more!!!! Soon!

I hope you will post pictures of it again after you apply the stain/color. Nice carving, especially for pine.
You got the background done very nicely.

Hey,Heidi
I don't know how long ago your stained wolf pack was done, but thought i was say it is way cool.

your lady form is very… say seductive. i like the pine grain in the body and the black gouged back ground is stunning
have you ever tried bass wood to carve? it's smooth as butter.
i've got some carvings i've worked on,and the pictures taken, just haven't taken the time to load them on,lazy i guess

No doordude, I've never carves bass wood. I WANT to, but it seems expensive. I'm used to carving on scrap pieces of pine or maple that is laying around the shop. That way if I "mess up" I don't feel like I wasted a piece of wood that I went out and spent money on.

Thanks for the compliments on this, and the lady carving. I'm working on another right now…hopefully I'll have it finished up by next weekend : )
