Project Information

I liked quite a few of the flip-top cabinets that have appeared on the Lumberjocks site. Quite a few had a power tool on each side of the table. I on the other hand don't have the room in my garage as my quest is to use my garage as place to park my cars when I'm not working on projects. This cabinet allows me to tuck it under the wing of my table saw cabinet when everything is stored away. When the planer is stored inside the cabinet I use the top as a work surface. I used ball-catch latches to lock the flip-up doors in place and the doors support the top from flipping. Since I only have one tool attached to this cabinet I increased the height of the back to reduce racking.

I used a solid 1/2" steel rod sandwich-d between two pieces of 3/4" ply and added some poplar trim. The drawer stores the extension tables and the tools for the planer.

Hi Ted

Great design and obviously suites your particular needs. I have some flip over units as well and am very happy with them.

Great work

That looks like a great idea; it will save you a lot of space and keep your shop more organized. It appears to be very well made. Congratulations.

Thanks all. This cabinet along with my other shop projects now allows me to park my cars in the garage when I'm not working on projects. Also setup time for tools like my planer are greatly reduced.

This is one of the nicer flip-top stands I've seen here. Well done.

thanks a lot Brandon. it's working well for me.

Knothead62 - i think the biggest benefit is the setup time being reduced. this thing is too heavy to be lugging around.

looks great.

I'm wondering - what does the flip top pivot on?

thanks!

thanks Josh

The 1/2" steel rod rotates on a couple of steel brackets that are mounted on the inside of the cabinet.

I don't have a planer yet, but I am drooling over one right now. I have limited space as well and this gives me an idea of what I should be looking at. Thanks for sharing.

Ted, I've been enjoying your posts. I am gathering ideas as I am just now getting serious about setting up my shop. I just have one question for you. When are you going to get your priorities straight and start parking those cars out in the rain? The flip cabinet is a great way to make more room for more wood, more tools. :)

Thanks Angie. I highly recommend the dewalt if a 13" suits your needs

@natalie - I agree with the cars outside :). When I'm knee deep working on a project, I usually do have both cars outside. Making that the standard would not go over too well with a certain someone. Thanks for the kind words.
