Last summer I took apart an old picnic table that had been here when we moved in 9 years ago and was starting to collapse. On examination I realized it was yellow cedar that had aged with real character. I book matched and glued together two of the yellow cedar planks. I saw that they were too long for the base so I had the idea to cut them down and then "stitch" the two pieces together with black leather. Stitched wood on a sewing machine base….get it?...
On the back side I routed out some channels at 3/4"x5/8" and inserted some ''splines'' to connect the two pieces. I also added additional ''splines'' to prevent the ends from splitting any more. In total there are 6''splines'' on the back.
The stand is from a New Williams sewing machine that I cleaned up and then applied a new coat of black paint with touches of gold to match the table top.
The height is approximately 28.75".
The top measures 59.5" long by 17.75" wide and 1 and 1/8" thick.
