Project Information
My wife requested a bench for the entry landing of our split level home. I had an old yellow cedar stair tread a friend had given me kicking around and thought this was the perfect project to repurpose it!
I had a good supply of 4/4 poplar on hand. I laminated some legs, set the top rails using mortise and tennon joints and the bottom rails using a large hand cut dovetail. the slats are simply dadoed and snap over the rails with a spot of glue holding them secure.
For the top, I skip planned the bottom side of the tread. I was going to plane the top as well, but the plank has a cup set to it that just compliments its use as a bench too well to do away with. I set a few black walnut butterfly keys in the top to cover an unsightly knot and secure a deep crack.
The poplar was treated to a coat of wood conditioner and 3 coats of Varathane brand Espresso Gel Stain. The top received a few coats of Watco natural Danish Oil.
