Project Information

Finished, but does not sound as good as first one. Have a piezo disk glued to the underside of the sound board, but the box is really thick wood. May need an open sound hole. Not sure, this is only my second one. Very good job. Nice matching set! I have found that the small thick boxes do not resonate nearly as well as larger thin ones. They look great but just don't have as good a sound. the piezo should help get the volume but it still won't sound as good as resonating wood. I use these real small boxes for basses or for small 1 watt amplifiers. I see you've reinforced the bottom of the neck in the box but with just three strings you really don't need that unless you have to thin the neck down for some reason to clear the box top. That added mass dampens vibrations too. Is the piezo glued to the lid of the box? Or is it under the neck? The box lid needs to not touch the neck if at all possible so it can vibrate freely. On thin boxes you may need a small triangle shape directly under the bridge supporting the lid but keeping contact to a minimum. Also a smaller bridge will help lid resonate better I have found. A small brass bolt or small piece of welding/brazing rod works well. The lighter/thinner (within reason) you can make a box and lid the better it will resonate and the better it will sound! Keep up the CBG work, you're doing great. They are addictive aren't they!! Please don't think I'm being too picky, I just want to help lumberjocks make improvements if I can. Love your gun werks site by the way! Lots of great projects!!

Thanks for your advice. Every job should be reviewed by a fresh set of eyes. I am realizing the same thing about the size and thickness of the box. Did glue the piezo to the underside of the sound board. Have been cutting the neck down to clear the box top. Need to get larger and thinner boxes. These were given to me. They are quiet addictive, keep me up at night. I am working on too many at one time, in my head. Thanks again for the advice.
