Project Information

My sister and her husband had me and my wife over for dinner and the subject of wood woorking came up. (Who would have thought!) She asked if I could make her a writing slope. I asked "What's that?"
And after a little google search and some sawdust this was the result.
I took an marquetry class here in Anaheim Calif. by Paul Schurch. Awesome class. I highly recommend it!! The flower is the Dogwood and I made a sort-of diamond design with a inlay strip and had the branches weave around it. Made of mahogany veneer and solid wood with Holly for the petals, Mahogany for the stems and colored poplar for the leaves.
The hardware came from: Lee Valley - quadrant hinges, SOS hinges
Horton Brass - Lock, drawer knobs
The supplier for the leather writing surface was hard to find, having never worked with leather. But thanks to the folks here on LJ I was given several good leads (You guys rock!!)
Special thanks to Bob Durnell, who being a fellow LJ and lives around the corner from me, helped inlay the leather into the finished piece. Thanks Bob!!
Finished with Arm-R-Seal from General Finish

Just gave it to here tonight at a family get-together. Needless to say she loved it!!!

Thanx for all the kind words. @ JGM0658… the leather is the green surface on the lower end of one of the pictures. It was originally a light tan and I used a green dye to color it to match the green leaves (GF Green Dye). Also unique but unable to see in the pictures is the ivy embossed in the leather. It really makes the piece organic.
Paul Schurch, the teacher, said… "Marquetry is only at the most 10% of the project yet if you do it well you can slide that decimal over one place to the right."
It is amazing. Without marquetry people have no reverence for a piece but when they see marquetry on it they almost always ask permission to touch it.
