Project Information

I have completed my first workbench using a plan I got from a woodworking magazine. It is a "weekend" project, but with my luck, it took a little longer than that. It is made from 2 by materials that were trimmed to remove the rounded edges, a shelf made from 3/4 in MDF, a solid core door for the top from the markdown aisle at Home Depot, some poplar to wrap the top and a sheet of hardboard to give me a working surface that can easily be replaced when damaged. I hope to add some additional features, such as a vise, later as time and money permits.

This looks like a really useable, good looking, solid workbench. Would you mind estimating what the total cost of materials (and time if you can) was for this bench?
Nice work.

Hey Don,

I would estimate that the total time was about 8 - 10 hours (as I had no help) and about $200 in materials.

I can look again to remember where I got the plans if anyone would like them. It wasn't my own.

Very functional workbench. Looks sturdy and well built. That bench looks like it is ready to kick some @#$%. Sorry - its Friday and I get a bit carried away as the weekend approaches. Looks a little too clean for me. Throw some sawdust on there! Great job.

Nice work bench. I may copy your design when I get around to building an assembly table. Right now I'm using a folding table.

Great looking bench! I have been wanting to build a nice bench for some time now. Those plans, I believe, are from woodsmith magazine "weekend workbench"
