Well, I've been cleaning up the shop and finally finished this today.
Not much cost into this one. I've had the vise for 15+ years so the cost of it doesn't count. I might have $30.00 into this. If you look at the base you'll see odd mortises and holes in random places. That's because the 1 1/8" thick maple is more recycled bunk beds from the local university. The top is made from two tabletops from the university cafeteria. The tables were rectangular so I ripped them down the middle and joined the pieces end to end with a scarf joint. I did that with both tables so that I had two long pieces and I screwed these to a sheet of 3/4" plywood so that I wood have a little more thickness and I could have a bottom to the tray in the middle. When I was going to put a skirt board around the whole thing I looked and didn't see anything suitable in my lumber pile, so I went to the local Lumberyard. I asked how much for 3 pieces of 1×4 maple 8 feet long each. They quoted me $86 and change…
So when I got home I looked a little harder in the shop and found some short pieces for the ends of the bench that were once ladders for, you guessed it, recycled bunk beds. lol. And to skirt the sides I ripped a maple board that I had been saving to make a canoe paddle.
Finish is BLO, Turps, and Beeswax.
All in all, I really pleased with this. I spent the afternoon at this bench sharpening planes and chisels, while listening/watching the wood whisperer on my ipad.
