Project Information

Three spoons, I made last year. They are made of linden, and drenched in linseed-oil.
I don´t know if they where that fun to carve (lost a lot of blood, rookie…), but it was the best form of meditation I have ever tried. Especially one day; when I was sitting on a small mountain, just me, a carving knife and this fine view:

Maybe it sounds at bit boring for some, but that´s the kind of day I will always remember.

Have a nice summer!

Wow! The spoons are beautiful, and your serene location. I haven't tried carving spoons but it's on my list. I need to learn how to scoop out the wood for the receptacle end and what tools to use.

Very nice looking spoons, they seem to flow with the grain of the wood.

Thank you!

For the "scooping" I used one of these:
From Blocket

Don´t know the english word for them..
A friend told me he made a spoon with a round drill-bit (looks like a ball with teeth on). Guess his way is allot faster, but not as fun.

Good job, I too find woodworking therapeutic. Frees up the mind after a hard week.

Lars that is an incredible view to carve from, and some real nice carvings. Where I live looks over the Rio Grande (river). Not nearly as spectacular but nice.

Enlarge the picture to about 4 ft wide and frame it, hang it on your wall. I also dare say that if you post it for sale you will get lots of buyers. That picture is very calming if you look at it any length of time.

I should point out that I have not taken that picture, and claim no rights to it.. I forgot to write that. Sorry.

But I agree it is really calming, and that´s the view you get from the mountain at summer nights.

Boring???? Nope, those are the kind of days that just make life good. I live in flatland and last year visited friends in the hills and I spent one whole day up in the woods alone. I didn't have a carving knife with me but I did bring my pruning saw and collected a few pieces of wood. Actually, what you did that day is my dream to be doing everyday. You are right about the 'meditation', or whatever it is that allows you into that zone where time is nonexistent. Great job on the spoons and the story adds value.

L-H Johnsen,

Where did you get your hook carving tools? Is there a company name or website?

VERY NICE PROJECT. FANTASTIC SETTING TO WORK. THIS IS A PROJECT I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE. I WAS THINKING ABOUT TRYING TO MAKE SPOONS ON A LATHE BUT CARVING SEEMS LIKE IT WOULD BE BETTER. YOU HAVE INSPIRED ME. BETWEEN BUILDING MY KAYAK AND A FEW OTHER THINGS, I WILL HAVE TO TRY THIS.
