Project Information

On the weekend I was looking at some of the art I have, created by my Mom, and I realized that it is wood-art and so I'm going to show it off.

Wood: fungus
Process: sealed, painted, sealed again.
Process 2: admired.

I had originally tried attaching a picture to the fungus but that didn't work and so I asked my Mom, who enjoys painting, to paint a picture on the fungus. After the learning curve, she was off and running and has created dozens and dozens of these pieces of work. It typically takes her a couple hours to do a painting - a little more for the larger pieces as seen here.

She encorporates the wood into the pix. (such as twigs growing through the fungus and holes.) I think you can see such a hole in the one fungus shown here at Picasa

My Mom will be 80 this year.

she also loves painting saws, as I've mentioned before and will post one in my Picasa album sometime this week if I remember. It's a BIG saw.

Debbie, you need to get her to paint a saw for you to hang in your shop. Her work is very beautiful and she is truly a gifted woman.

Neat! What are you sealing it with? I think I'd have to do a pretty hard sell to have something fungus related prominently displayed in the house…

I'm not sure what she seals it with. I'll ask her tonight.

she says that she uses "sizing' and if you don't seal it first nothing will stick to it.
Sizing: what you use before you paint or wallpaper for the first time.
When she is done painting she seals it again with a spray urethane.

Well… that's… new.

Great paintings, and, dare I ask what inspired the choice of medium… or does fungus mean something different in "Canadian"? ;)

I found a fungus while hiking and thought it would be a great backdrop for a photo. It would have been if the photo had fit to the shape of the fungus better.
I'll get the camera out and post my attempt at my vision.

I guess the fungus spoke to me :)

heheh I'm not sure what Fungus means in USA-ian. :)

Wow, does she paint from her head or does she paint by looking at something? Two hours to do one of these, she has unbelievable tallent!! I paint but it would take months to do something this well and I'd have to have some picture to at least get some ideas from.
