Project Information

I decided to make a prototype of the wood whisperer pencil holders before I made a big batch of them before christmas. I used mahogony for the base and sitka spruce for the sides. I finished it with a coat of poly. In the pictures there is only one coat of poly. I hope to make the next buch the same and if you have any tips or ideas please let me know. I cut the miters for the sides using my 45 degrees chamfer bit on my router table with some assistance from the fence.

I tend to agree with EricW. If you want to use the spruce, perhaps you could do a small/thin mahogany rim around the top. I think a little more color up on top will help tie in the base and complete the project.

Let us know how it all turns out…

yes, the spruce really does look like pine, not saying theres anything wrong with pine (I do alot of projects with pine because thats all i can aford)
but when i dont like the colour, i just stain it and it comes out nicely

Yeah im sure that sitka spruce is proberly a posh name for pine and i might glue up a pine and mahogony panel for the sides to add a bit of colour
