Showcase cover image for Wood Storage Room

Project Information

This is a wood storage room I built under our deck once I had the water drainage system under the deck floor pretty reliable. The dark red pipe in the top of the first picture is PVC pipe cut in half lengthwise to catch the water draining from the chutes made from aluminum flashing installed in cedar guides that taper down from the far end. It catches almost all the water coming through the deck floor.

I needed to get the rack of wood out of my shop to make way for the new jointer a few years ago so I built this room with a locked door and a recycled picture window that I could not even give away to Habitat for Humanity. I added a few of the early pictures of how I built the foundation. The floor is treated plywood and it sits on a level bed of pea gravel which makes it pretty solid. It is just outside the basement shop so it is real handy to get wood. I try not to throw any good piece of wood away. I go there often to get small pieces for projects. The door is made from tongue and groove pine carsiding and I learned how to install vinyl siding on this project.

Nice wood storage area. How did you keep water from above deck out?

Thanks for sharing.

Good Luck!

Hi Viking. I made a lot of grooved pieces of cedar that tapered down from the wall side. Then I slid in a piece of aluminum flashing and caulked it in around the bottom. The water falls through the cracks onto the flashing and drops into the half pipe of PVC which drains to the back yard drain.

Jim,

It is good that you have a place for wood storage, and could redo this area to provide that.

A dedicated wood storage area is certainly on my wish list. You have done such a good job on this one. I really like the picture window.

Thanks for the ideas.

Hey, Jim, I've been trying to get around to building a storage shed for my lumber for so long that thinking about it has probably worn a hole in my brain in a certain spot. Good work.
