Project Information

My father fancies himself a rock hound, so during my daughters science fair on geode growing I came up with a very unusual idea. I inside out turned 4 blocks of redwood, before I glued them together to turn the outside shape, I epoxied in some crushed calcite (wanted to try to grow some alum but didn't have time for experimenting) and placed a pyramid imbibed into the center top covered in aluminum tape. Turned, finished, drilled a large diameter hole in the bottom. Inserted and glued in a LED camping lantern with the top remove and glued in a dowel at a angle so when it gets pushed on it hits the lanterns on off button and waxed till it was smooth, and wallah, my dad has the first ever rock geode desk lamp.

Great job! I think the calcite was a better choice than the alum - it will probably hold up better and I think it has better optical properties to reflect the light. Thanks for sharing.
