Wood Drum

Just a fantastic job of craftsmanship, design and woods used. Interesting project!

I would like to make one of those someday. Do you come up with the designs yourself or do you find plans? I would imagine if I came up with one it would sound pretty terrible.

I've made a couple of these. Never thought of the storage in the sides for the mallets. Brilliant.

How troublesome are they to tune?

Thanks for the comments everyone. The drum was built from a plan I just customized it a bit; sorry I don't remember where I got the plan. The drum is not readily tunable but I suppose it could be done by removing stock from the strike pads by sanding or filing.

That is my understanding, they are tuned somewhat like a xylophone, by removing wood from the bottom of each tongue. We built a xylophone using padauk for the keys, nice sounds.

Kewl, and nice design. I'm in the process of making yet another one myself, i'm going with a set of solid wood carved sticks this time.

I love the sound they make I usually sit outside under a tree and play a couple times a week just to relax for the evening. Enjoy it and have fun
