Project Information

Today i worked in the shop and saw that my sliding table is really off (not parallel at all to the blade) and all the material that I cut on it for a magazine rack I am building has to be cut again. You probably know how this feels….

So, instead I made a duck that wobbles when you walk it for my 1.5 years old. was very satisfying, I must confess. The most complex part was making the wheels as they have off center holes (that what makes the duck wobble). usually i use the holesaw for making wheels and it has a 6mm drill bit in the middle. I found out that I can remove the bit and if i drill really slow it works well enough.
took about an hour to make. its finished with furniture wax. my wife still has to decorate it a bit (eyes, etc).

its is made from scrap Rimu.

You know what they say "If the saw gives you parallelograms, then make a duck".

Very clever! Sometimes the spontaneous projects are the best…when the wood speaks ( or quacks) to you. What does your 1 1/2 yo critic say?

he is very happy with it (although the wobble is a bit too wobbly and the duck sometimes gets too excited and falls on its side). I am trying to capture a movie of him running with the duck but he tends to (naturally) run away from me, so all I got are very good movies of a boy running from behind.

too cute.

friends of ours had something like this once and they had pieces of rubber on the wheels so that it looked (and sounded) like webbed feet hitting the floor when it walked.. too cute for words)

If you cut a kerf in the wheels you can glue a piece of inner tube in. As MsDebbieP states it will look and sound like a duck. Great looking toy! No batteries required!
