Project Information

After watching some online videos about how to make a winged bowl, I decided to give it a try. This is the video that I referenced - http://www.youtube.com/user/bobham5#p/u/173/BUeByxpbB9M . Here's my first try at one. It's made of maple with a walnut lid and measures 7.25"w x 2.5"d x 2.125"h.

I'm happy with the overall shape of the top portion and with the lid. However, I did manage to take a chunk out of the underside near the foot. Another thing that I experienced was that after sanding, the leading edge was sanded more that the trailing edge - so now the profile of the leading edge is thinner than the trailing. Sorta like a propeller, I guess.

Is that is a common thing to happen with this type of turning? Is there another method of sanding that will keep the shape better? I wrapped sandpaper around a foam sanding block and held it against the piece while spinning. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks and all comments are welcome!

The only way to prevent the leading edge from wearing down faster than the trailing edge is to sand the piece off the lathe, using either a powered detail sander or elbow grease. This method has the advantage of not busting your fingers, which is a common event in my shop while sanding winged shapes on the lathe.

Alternatively, you need a reversing lathe and chuck designed for reverse - otherwise it spins off. You should be prepared with the proper list of four-letter words if this should happen, just saying ;) Both edges will then wear down evenly (providing you sand the piece the same amount in each direction), but the middle of the "wing" area will be thicker.

With all that said, nice looking turning.

Nicely done. I've tried a winged box once and it is a hard job. When the wood turns it really sounds like a helicopter is trying to fly in your shop!!

Jim gave you the only options on the sanding. You did a nice job! I like the raised lip above the legs. I love making these; destroyed one last week (aka: design opportunity). I focus on taking light small cuts and try to go a smooth as I can on my final cuts. Don't you just love that propeller sound?

Your choice of woods is my favorite for these. What finish?
