Project Information
A few years ago, my circle of friends embarked on a free time draining life stage called parenthood. One of my best friends and I decided to take on a woodworking project together, so that we would have an excuse to hang out (child and spouse free). Since my friend had taken up wing chun, he suggested that he make a wing chun dummy so that he can practice at home. The arms and legs are made of white oak, and wedged into place with a through mortise. The main trunk is a lamination of at least a full sheet of MDF. The base is a combination of additional scrap material augmented with some pine/fir. The last two photos are the unfinished work in progress.
We had NO idea what we got ourselves into, as the project was far more involved than expected, and our free time was far more sparse than we could have imagined. Fast forward 2 years, and we are FINALLY done. This project was a spectacular skill builder as we lost track of how many mistakes we made and had to fix. By the time we got to working on the base, both of us drastically improved in our woodworking ability, and upper body strength from moving those heavy parts. As we were closing on this project, one looming question remains to be answered… "so…what's our next project?"
