Project Information

I have been working my way around 17th century carving styles for a little while now, not long enough to have it mastered, (a long way from that) but long enough to feel somewhat comfortable, and of course I've continually updated my progress and experimentation on my blog 'http://insidetheworkshop.blogspot.com/

I had just completed a version of a bible box when I fielded a message from an old acquaintance who was getting married and looking for a box for a "wine ceremony" something I hadn't heard of before.

apparently the way it works is during the wedding ceremony the couple places a bottle of wine and two letters inside the box, the box is then sealed shut by nailing or somehow locking it. The letters are written by each about the other, stating all the things hey love about them and why the want to be married to them. The plan is to reopen the box at a 25th year anniversary and the pair can then enjoy the words that young love brings easily to the lips.

The contingency plan would be to break the seal in case of separation or marriage counseling and when you read the words and drink the wine you remember why you decided to be together in the first place.

At any rate this gentlemen asked for a box and so I delivered, teh box is sized to fit two standard bottles of wine side by side because they decided they wanted to seal some glasses inside as well. It is done in red oak. All the carving and woodwork was done by hand and powered by sweat of brow. and you can find more about this box by going here on my blog.

Hello Oldwolf,
This carving gives a lot of character to the box. Someday I will have to buy that Peter Follansbee DVD on 17th century American carving style.

That is an amazing idea for almost any anniversary. I was looking for a good idea for my 5th to give to my wife since it is the wood anniversary anyway.
