Many thanks to John W. Nixon over at Eagle Lake Woodworking for posting the measured drawing on his site. My wife saw the pictures and loved the idea; so off to the shop I went. I used red oak with Minwax's cherry stain and fast dry satin polyurethane.
The balancers are dated with an inlaid 2009 coin; since I was a little worried about the poly changing the dimension of the inlay relief, I used the spray-on version. I'm pretty happy with the product, it went on easy and dried very quickly. I sprayed two coats, then buffed it smooth with rubbing compound and sprayed on an additional coat. They feel very smooth and still have the satin look I was after.
