This marquetry box was commissioned as a wedding gift for a young lady that loves white tulips.
The top marquetry piece used a variety of woods-English and American sycamore, chestnut burl, walnut burl and dyed koto (leaves and bright white portions of the tulips). The box itself is made from a beautiful piece of maple with a touch of birdseye effect, and is further accentuated with imported Japanese washi papers. Box dimensions are 7×7-1/4×3-5/8 inches.
There is a single, removable tray which includes a felt insert for earrings, rings and other small items. The hinges are solid brass (Brusso), and are designed to provide a solid stop at 95 degrees for the lid to remain open.
The box is finished with multiple layers of pure tung oil, topped with a very fine microcrystalline wax surface which protects against fingerprints and light moisture.
