Project Information

This is a murphy bed that was completed in June 2010. It features 2 bookcase with 3 drawers and adjustable shelves. The design on the face is a new one that is very contemporary with simple lines. I call it the Contempo. It was dressed up with a standard crown and base moldings.

Looks good.
Great work.

I bought a kit from rockler for murphy's bed and have had a chance to start on it.

Chris,
Looks great! I'm curious, what kind of paint did you use?

Thanks,

Ron,
I use a white lacquer from Sherwin Williams. My process is to spray a coat of white lacquer undercoater, sand, and then the white lacquer. If I used MDF (none on this bed) I'll at least double coat with the undercoater and concentrate on the endgrains.

I use it mainly because of how fast if dries. The undercoater dries within 15 min. The top coat can be handled within an hour. I usually wait over night before I do any final assembly.

I've been slowing the drying process down a little on the final coat because it does dry so fast. I'll add a slow evaporating lacquer thinner (retarder). This allows the finish to settle before the thinners flash off.

Chris,
Thanks for the info. I'm in the process of building a couple of closet organizers and looking for a durable finish - I think I will try lacquer and see how it goes.

Thanks again,
