Project Information

I recently designed and built this music stand as a birthday gift for my wife who is learning to play the guitar. I had some extra wenge and figured bubinga that I was holding onto for a special occasion and decided to use it for this project. After doing a little on-line research I came up with this design. Two things that I wanted to include in this project; aluminum and inlay. I used aluminum track and square aluminum tubing for the column and 1"dia solid aluminum for the feet. The gaboon ebony inlay is meant to resemble a blank sheet of music. I used a bridal joint for one set of legs while the other two are doweled. Finish is tung oil and hand wiped poly finished with a coat of wax. The hgt adjustment range is about 22" so that the stand can be used in a seated or standing position and a tilt range of about 25-30 degrees.

Outstanding work. A lot of beautiful details. I loved the foot treatment too. Are the round thingies at the end of each foot height adjustable?

It came out great Brian. I'm glad I got to see most of it in person. Your sense of form/functional detail is impeccable. I like the blank score.

Hi Mike, to answer you question the 1"round alum foot detail are not height adjustible. They simply "float" the leg off the floor and add visual interest to the piece. They have felt pads on the bottom to protect our hardwood floors.

Thank you everyone for your comments!

Hi Brian,

I experimented with the feet and used a CA glue to bond the wood and alum. It seams to have worked.

Klynn, Thank you very much. Since I have a woodworking business, albeit, part time at the moment I plan to market this piece so I cannot share the plans. Hope you understand.

Brian, great project! I love music stands.

In the title you say you used wenge also, but in the description area you say it's ebony. Did you use both wenge and ebony in this music stand or just one of those?

FYI, I made a blog post today about bubinga, and thought your project would be nice to include as an example. So I've used the lumberjocks widget thing to link back to your project page here. Hope that's okay.

Hi Mark,

Thank you and yes that is fine to use this as an example. To answer your question I used all three woods; bubinga, wenge and ebony. The feet, column, and ledge are wenge while the gaboon ebony was inlayed into the bubinga to resemble a blank sheet of music.
