Project Information

Around three weeks ago, one of the hinges broke on my favorite pair of sunglasses - bummer!

Instead of buying a new pair, I found an older pair and limped along with them - until today, that is…......

Three days ago I started making what you see here - a solid walnut, handcrafted pair of wayfarer sunglasses.

I used my old pair as a template and harvested the lenses and little metal posts on the front - everything else is homemade, to include the hinges.

Day one was spent creating the main body of the glasses and figuring out how to hold in the lenses (solved by a grinding disc in my dremel). Tools used: Scrollsaw, sander and dremel.

Day two was cutting the arms and trying a very unsuccessful 1st attempt at hinges - both arms went into the trash. Doh!

Today was spent cutting another set of arms and figuring out a successful way of making the hinges. Tools used: Scrollsaw and dremel and a bunch of hand sanding.

Finish is a coat of walnut tinted danish oil and two coats of thinned shellac.

Pic 5 is a shameless "selfie" with my new shades. ;-)

Cheers!

Wow really nice Bob. Cool factor is way high on this project. I've already decided I have to make a pair for myself.

Great Job! I hope you enter those in the walnut contest.

Last year there was an article in the weekly Dayton (Ohio) City Paper about a guy in nearby Yellow Springs, Ohio who makes wooden eyeglass frames and sells them to a local independent optical shop (in Oakwood, Ohio) - apparently they are becoming a hot fashion trend that appeals to various sectors of the market (eco-friendly, buy American, support small business). The guy has even had orders from customers in other states.

I really like those…you did great. I have read stories of other people making them, plus have seen some in tourist galleries here in the Islands…pretty spendy if I remember correctly

Impressive work, you have the patience and determination of a saint. Myself I use the cheapest sunglasses I can find so I do not get upset when they get lost, broken or on a rare occasion, thrown out the car window. (laughing)

That is way cool.
I wonder if they would work for bifocals too. Hmmm.

Good job Bob. You are a crazy guy.

uh….......WOW! Leave for a couple of hours and look at this!

Thanks everyone for all the compliments, and yes I can certainly take a joke!

Personally, I feel the same way about Pic 5! ;-)

Cheers!

I would love to enter this in the walnut contest, but for some strange reason it looks like they closed the contest already. Only six days into the contest.

Such is life, I guess.

Coolest shades ever!

The contest is supposed to go to the 28th. Some of us think the entry link is just broken at the moment (another one of the site problems). Try back after the weekend. These are too good not to enter!
