Project Information

This walnut slab I acquired a while back and was struggling for ideas of how to use it. It had some awesome crotch figure, but had a large crack straight down the middle that would have been tricky to fix with epoxy.

Being a guy who likes contrast, I figured I'd split it, joint/plane it to make flattening a breeze, then put the maple stripe for an accent.

The base, it's a variation on my live edge dining table bases, simply cut down to size. Some folks don't like the look of natural poplar, but I do. It seems to compliment the figure in the walnut as well.

As for a finish? Some shellac to seal it and some marine spar varnish as this piece is on our screened-in porch.

On one hand the stripe adds visual interest, but on the other, and also where my heart leans, is it took an incredible chunk o wood, and if you had cut the trashy wood out, and just rejoined it, from what you are showing here I think the 2 sides would be awesome together. It doesn't look like you removed much, based on grain matchup.

Love the legs. Any solid wood table base is much preferable IMHO to those ghastly hairpin things. Evidently many don't share my opinion, based on the push you see on them. I guess that's why we embrace so many different styles.

I like what you've done. The joining of the crack with maple is a really nice touch. I really like the shape and look of the legs. Well done.
