Project Information

My wife asked for a bench for the kiddo's to take off and store their shoes. After much deliberation we decided that right next to the door was the only place that made sense to put it, which limited the size a bit.

The bench is made from air dried walnut with mortise and tenon joinery, with through mortises joining the legs to the top pieces. First time doing through mortises. The lower shelf slats are joined to the aprons with double dado joints. This was one of my quickest projects I've made to date, taking me just few weeks to build.

It's finished with 2 coats of tung oil and one coat or wipe on satin poly. In hindsight I wish I had skipped the poly but with it being a bench by the door and the potential for wet clothes or shoes coming in contact with it, I opted for the more durable top coat.

I really enjoyed working on this one, particularly milling the lumber and seeing the true color and depth of the grain for the first time.

Overall Dimensions: 16" W x 18" H x 31" L

Thanks for looking!

Beautiful piece. I love the lines and particularly the through mortises. Should last a long time.

Beautiful bench. It's as well executed as it was conceived. I think you made the right decision with the finish too.

Quik,
That bench is far too nice to put shoes on! Love the through tenons and the angular features.
