Project Information

Here's another Andrew Crawford style box. This is the first one I've completed since returning from spending a few days with him in England (see my review "Á box making vacation in England" posted in May). This one is in walnut burl veneer, book-matched on the lid and front. It measures 10"by 7 1/4"and is 4 1/2"high.

The substrate is Baltic birch ply. Sides and back are matched to flow around. Interior is veneered in curly maple. The single tray is Jacaranda rosewood with green velvet lining. Base is also lined in green velvet.

The lock escutcheon inlay is black mother of pearl, framed in a black-white-black line. The finish is french polish. The edging is boxwood with more black-white-black lines. There are also black-white-black line accents on the inside of the lid and base openings.

The incandescent lights give the box a warmer color than it actually is, as there is no stain or coloring other than the super blonde shellac.

Excellent job. I like the edges' moulding (inlayed as I presumed) and the velvet on the side. How did you locked in the edges of the velvet? Thanks for posting.

That is absolutely gorgeous in every aspect! The walnut burl veneer is set off very nicely by the curly maple inlay, very nice indeed sir.
