Project Information

This pair of bedside tables was commisioned by a friend of my wife. She gave me the outside dimensions and basically turned me loose. I still have the bad habit of designing-as-I-go, so I didn't start out with the idea of doing all of those through tenons. Nothing more therapeutic than hand chiseling mortises! Everything started as rough walnut obtained locally that had been sitting in a barn for decades. I also did not plan on book-matching the back pieces of the book rack, but since I had to resaw those pieces to get them "lighter" in appearance, it just worked out that way. Finish is tung oil followed by 4 coats of poly on the base, and 8 coats on the top.

I'd like an opinion on something from those reading this - since these were for a friend, my price was quite low - any thoughts on what the market would bear if doing this as a full priced custom job? Thanks to all in advance.

kevmann64,
I really like your design on the fly, projects. You have a unique set of table/bookcases that exhibit some excellent craftmanship. Very nice, indeed. I'm sure your client must be thrilled with them. Sorry, that I can't provide any information regarding, pricing. But, most commissioned pieces are done according to what the clent is willing to let go of after some negotiation. Congratulations, on such a successfull and unique build.

Sincerely,
Ken McGinnis

I would have to say at least $350 ea, shoot the finishing alone has a quite a few hours in it. I've found any time you put a curve on anything, it quadruples the time it takes to do something straight.

They look beautiful. I like the angled wedges in the tenons.
