Project Information

This was a fun project. I really get a kick out of making small side tables and coffee tables.

Anyway, I found all of the wood via craigslist. The walnut came from an older gentleman who woodworked for fun and had had the top slab and the other walnut for the past 40 years. The bow ties were added more for effect than to prevent cracking. I don't think that the cracks were going anywhere after the 40 years. I flattened the top with my Router and finished it with my no. 7 handplane which I have gotten mighty sharp. I only had to sand with 220 and 320 after that.

The red oak was bought from a woodworker who had passed away close by me, and had bought an entire tree from the Amish folk in PA.

The design on the side was my from my beautiful wife. She had it so there are three hearts, one for her, for my son, and one for me. I like being able to incorporate all of my tools into what I make so it was fun scroll sawing that out.

I made it also so we could open it from either side, to get whatever we are keeping in the drawers.

Finish is Tried and True Danish Oil and Tried and True Varnish Oil.

Thanks for looking,

The Swede

Look really cool Kaleb. Love the idea of drawers opening from either side. I have to try that since it allows for furniture to be displayed either way. Love the hearts too.

Nice table. I was wondering how you got the wood so dark. The I began to read, 40 + year old walnut will age that way.
