Project Information
This is a piece I made for my home. We had this awkward space at the top of our entry way and wanted a table of sorts to hold keys and parking passes (so it needed a drawer), and of course hold the wife's purse (which determined the height of the lower shelf). It had to be thin enough not to interfere with the door leading to our utility closet. So this is what I came up with.
The materials are Walnut and some great curly figured maple. All mortise and tenon joints, even on the tiny stretchers that hold up the floating bottom shelf. I am a big fan of floating features in furniture and the design for the lower shelf gave me a chance to showcase this great slice of maple. Dovetail for the drawer, which was cut from the same piece as the front apron. There is no handle for the drawer, but the underside is cut away creating a finger groove invisible from the front. The finish is several coats of tung oil (which make the maple look just incredible), and several coats of wipe on poly.
Hope you like it! Feel free to check out more pictures here
