Project Information

This is a piece I made for my home. We had this awkward space at the top of our entry way and wanted a table of sorts to hold keys and parking passes (so it needed a drawer), and of course hold the wife's purse (which determined the height of the lower shelf). It had to be thin enough not to interfere with the door leading to our utility closet. So this is what I came up with.

The materials are Walnut and some great curly figured maple. All mortise and tenon joints, even on the tiny stretchers that hold up the floating bottom shelf. I am a big fan of floating features in furniture and the design for the lower shelf gave me a chance to showcase this great slice of maple. Dovetail for the drawer, which was cut from the same piece as the front apron. There is no handle for the drawer, but the underside is cut away creating a finger groove invisible from the front. The finish is several coats of tung oil (which make the maple look just incredible), and several coats of wipe on poly.

Hope you like it! Feel free to check out more pictures here

Very nice! The understated walnut shows off the maple perfectly. I really enjoy works that don't have two or more highly figured woods "competing" for the spotlight.

Excellent choice as well as design.

Great Job. Love the wood Combo and the finish. The thing I like most is the design and style, the floating Maple slab is the kicker. Really nice. Maybe find a different spot in your home to showcase this piece and build something else for the top of the stairs (MHO).

Excellent job showing off the maple. The tung oil certainly accomplished its job.

I'd have to agree that the floating slab of maple really caught my eye as well. It almost makes the top feel reserved in a way, since that piece is "in its place," framed by the walnut.

Now I have to go check out the link to the other pictures!

Great seeing all those pictures and watching it go together. Thanks for posting those.

I guess you can take the door stopper out of the trim now? Hopefully you've put a door stop on the door hinge so you don't wreck this wonderful table!

Thank you all for the very kind words.

Jonathan, good eye noticing the door stop. I took the picture right after it was done and have since removed the door stop on the molding (and put one on the door hinge).

JorgeG, of course I am concerned about the wood coming apart. However given the fairly narrow piece of maple (labout 4"") and the fact that it's been fine through all 4 seasons, I think I'm in the clear. If I move to a different climate, I might have a problem.

That is nice. Its like a showcase for the curly maple. Walnut and curly maple are like cake and icecream. Excellent job.
