Project Information

This is a small jewelry chest it is 8 ¾" x 5 ½" x 4". The top is solid ¼" book-matched Bird's Eye Maple with 1/8" Purpleheart inlay. I used Walnut for the box sides and Maple for the strings. The method that I used to install the Maple string and cut the walnut is described in Tim Hill Blog "Secrets of the String Box Revealed ". The 5/4 Walnut is then resaw to produce ½" book matched box sides. I used a 45° 'V' bit to miter the corners of the two halves. Instead of cutting the wood for ends using a table saw I used a 45° 'V' bit to cut the board. This gave me about 1/64" of a kerf. This helped with matching the string inserts at the corners.

Very cool. The drawer is a great addition. How did you cut the mortises for the quad hinges?
