Project Information

You don't just purchase new bedroom furniture without finding something else is out of whack when you look around the room.
We had a tall mirror stuck on the wall, which had served it's purpose for many years but the wife said it looked out of place with the new furniture. I had to agree (she thinks she is the boss!).
So I had a challenge. Take off the mirror & patch up the wall or put a frame around the mirror that matched the new furniture. I chose the later.
The mirror is made out of Australian Mountain Ash (eucalyptus hardwood). The bedroom furniture was said to be Mountain Ash but I don't think it grows in China.
I used basic joinery techniques but the challenge was to make the frame compatible in design with the new furniture.
There were turned pieces that slotted into the top corners. It took a bit of work to get the design right & make sure the joints were strong.
The sides were heavily chamfered, I found the best way to get a consistent chamfer was to do it on the table saw with a rough jig.
I rebated around the frame to allow plenty of room around the mirror for expansion. Didn't want the boss complaining about 7 years bad luck for a broken glass.
The frame was screwed to the wall with toggle bolts. I recessed the holes & turned up buttons to hide the screws.
A satin poly coat was brushed on, 4 coats.
No more complaints from the boss so everyone is happy.
Grumpy.
