The sawmill owner that I used to visit in North West NJ, used to throw me pieces of wood that he likes but he knew that he'd never sell as part of his business. He cut mostly for farm buildings, trucks floors and other types of work. He did have a kiln so some furniture grade lumber was produced.
This walnut slab was one of the gift pieces of wood.
I made it into a wall clock for my daughter Karrie
The finish was a Danish Oil type of finish and then wet sanded the finish and a random oribital sander "ROS" The pores were filled with sanding slurry and dried. here is one crack in the middle of the knot and it was also filled with the slurry and filled up the crack.
This clock was made in the later years of 1990's. So it's about 10 years old.
