Project Information

The sawmill owner that I used to visit in North West NJ, used to throw me pieces of wood that he likes but he knew that he'd never sell as part of his business. He cut mostly for farm buildings, trucks floors and other types of work. He did have a kiln so some furniture grade lumber was produced.

This walnut slab was one of the gift pieces of wood.

I made it into a wall clock for my daughter Karrie

The finish was a Danish Oil type of finish and then wet sanded the finish and a random oribital sander "ROS" The pores were filled with sanding slurry and dried. here is one crack in the middle of the knot and it was also filled with the slurry and filled up the crack.

This clock was made in the later years of 1990's. So it's about 10 years old.

It never ceases to surprise me at the unusual wood that you manage to "find". This piece has a lot of character and, making it into a clock creates a unique project that I am sure Karrie adores.

Nice job.

Karson-

Beautiful clock! Neat idea for filling the pores in the wood. As for Lee's comment- for retired guy there is only one 6:40 on the clock- P.M.!

Karson, how can you always be so lucky to get wood given to you. I must be visiting the wrong places or I don't have the right connections…..............LOL

Very nicely done. Walnut is one of my favorites too.

I have to laugh, everyone is "observing" the wrong time, but no one has noticed that my special clock has 2 number ones. One at one o'clock and one at eleven o'clock. It has been that way for so long that I couldn't "fall back" to change it now, it is part of it character. I am afraid that my twins will have some trouble learning to tell time.

I do love my clock, when I first saw the wood I said to dad - That is a clock, can't you see it. Next thing I knew, it was mine (looking much better than when I first saw it). It has such sentimenal value, it was one of the first things I hung up after moving. It is in my kitchen - the center of activity in my house.

Well I didn't notice the two 1's so much for being observant. We see what we want to see.
