Project Information

To commemorate my newly re-designed and renamed shop, I made my self the Sleepy Dragon walking stick. The inspiration and instruction came from Paul Seller's walking cane videos on his website. I made it to be extra beefy because, well, I'm an extra beefy guy. It's made from a branch of cedar, with the head piece carved from padauk. The egg is an opalite. This is going to be a perpetual work in progress as I figure out what to put on it next. All of the carving was done by hand over a period of about a month. Yes, the egg lights up from underneath by a small LED light. Yes, that is a foot at the bottom. I went on a weekend camping trip with friends to the beach a couple of weeks ago and knew my bad hip wasn't going to like all the loose white sand. The night before the trip I had a last minute inspiration to make the foot for the base. It worked better than expected. The stick didn't bog down at all and was a great help in getting around all those sand dunes. I beveled out the hole to act as a sort of primitive ankle so it flexes as I walk. It's made from a big chunk of Phillipine mahogany. I've yet to finish carving it into a dragon's foot, but the basic shape still suits its purpose. I have several more ideas to add to this, so stay tuned for updates.

That is REALLY Cool! The flexible foot is brilliant, and I love the lighted egg as a top piece. Definitely a favorite, and I might have to steal a few of those ideas for some of my own sticks. I will also have to check out those videos. Thanks for sharing.

Bordering on true whimsy here, nice walking stick, love that foot, and can see how it would help in sand, mud, snow or a lot of surfaces where a broader "footprint" would help balance, and keep you from sinking in.

I wonder if some Naturalist will see your tracks and think they just discovered the last Winky Winky bird, or some such.

Thanks for posting, made me smile.
